Description

A. GILL IAM. Harness-Saddles. No. 144,613; PatentedNdv.18, 1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
ALGERNON GILLIAM, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-'SADDLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,613, dated November 18, 1873 application filed May 29, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALGERNON GILLIAM, of the city of Pittsburg, county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gig-Trees and Harness-Saddles and I do hereby declare the following to be a true and correct description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making part and parcel of this, my specification. 7
The nature of my invention consists, first, in giving greater strength and durability to the covered seat of the tree, so that there may be little or no danger of breaking or injury to the leather with which the seat is covered. This is done by inserting between the back or cantle piece of the saddle and the seat a piece of heavy leather or welt that projects above the seat and back, and to which the covering of leather applied to the seat and back is stitched or sewed, and thereby making a complete and workmanlike finish to that part of the saddle, and admitting the same to be bound in any suitable manner with a lighter grade or texture of leather.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed ing through the same, as seen at a. The leather or welt A projects beyond the seat and back, in order that the leather used in covering the seat and back may be stitched to and through the same, thus preventing any injury or breaking of the leather at that point of the saddle, that is now caused by its passing round the sharp edges of the metallic seat and back to the same, affording by this construction a pliable and somewhat elastic movement to the covering. a and a represent the leather covering of the saddle and back; or, if the back piece 0 does not require such covering of leather, the same can be clamped or secured at or near the end of the leather welt, and between it and the back piece 0. The whole covering when stitched is shown at a, Fig. 3.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The leather or welt A, clamped and secured between the seat B and the back plate or cantle O, in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
2. The within-described means of securing the leather upon the seat and back of the saddle (and covering the same) by the cornbination of the covering cu with the leather or welt A, seat B, and back plate or cantle G, for the purposes herein set forth.
ALGERNON GILLIAM.
