COLLAR` FOR HARNESS.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,133, dated June 3, 1851.

To all whom t may concern l Be it known that I, JOSEPH WV. Barcos, of the city of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga., and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Constructing Draft Collars for Horses or other Draft Animals; and I do hereby declare that` the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had'` to the accompanying drawings,and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification.

, The nat-ure of my invention consists in constructing a self adjusting draft collar so arranged as to dispense with the cumbrous hames and collars now in use and at the same time securing the same amount of strength, durability, and causing the horse or other draft animal to draw a light or heavy load with more `ease and facility than with `other forms of `collars now in use. By its arrangement and construction it is more easily adjusted to the neck and at the same time cansino' no friction upon the neck or shoulder blades possessing `also the novel feature of being of much less weight than the usual form of collars and haines that it is more easily adjusted and borne upon the neckand accomplishes also the twofold object offdurability and cheapness of construction. j

To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its `construction and operation,v

I construct my draft collar A, Fig.` l, of any desirable size and the curved metallic breast plate B, Fig. 3, is formed of iron, steel, or other metal as may be required. The holes C in Fig. 3 are to` receive the nut end E of clipD, F ig.\5, which is secured by nuts as shown at F in Fig. 2 and having the front position, as shown by the clips D in collar A, Fig. 1,\thereby making an easy l adjust-ing joint according to the point of draft. The neck strap `Gr is secured by stitching rivets or other fastenings` to the` upper portion `of the collarA A, which is adjusted to theneck by the buckles H.` The holes L in the metallicbreast plate B, Fig. 3, are for the reception of rivets whereby the outside covering is morefirmly secured than by stitching alone, as shown at M M,

The leather pattern, Fig. 4, gives form and shape to the leather covering and padding of the metallic plate B, Fig. 3, which is the `lower portion of the collar, Fig. 1,

as shown at R and at S in Fig. 2. The clips D in Fig. l correspond to the clips D in Fig. 2. `The holes U in the clips D are for the reception of rivets whereby the traces are secured. The inside `padding of the collars, Fig. 1 and Fig. 2, may be leather,` `cloth or` other material, as experience may hereafter dictate.

I do not intend to confine myself exclusively to the aforesaid arrangement but to adopt any other without changing the essen tial features of my invent-ion as hereinafter claimed.

My draft collar will admit of eve-ry va riety of style and finish which inclination or taste may dictate.

I do not claim generally the haine in one piece with pads of limited length but what I do claimas my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The U shaped metallic breast plate B suit-` ably padded and made to fit around the neck of the horse, the same being so limited in length as not to reach the shoulder blades of the animal, andbeing suspended from the neck by a neck strap.`
