Description

A.IW. C AVERLY. l Tilting Stands for Carboys.' No. 144,442.

Tief.;
UNITED STATES ABNER W. GAVERLY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lvN TILTING-STANDS FOR CARBOVS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,442, dated November 11, `1873; application filed August 16, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABNER W. CAVERLY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Tilting- Stand for Carboys, of which the following is a specification:
y My invention consists of a tilting or rocking stand for oarboys to be used in tilting the carboys for pouring out the contents; the object being to enable the operator to turn the carboys both down and up with a gentle and regular motion, so that the acid will not be spilled or forcibly ejected by the swashing of it about Within the carboy by the irregular and sudden motions common to the ordinary way of handling carboys. The acids contained inthe carboys generally are injurious to the flesh, also to the clothes, and it is desirable, therefore, to avoid spilling or other- Wise causing them to get on the person ofthe operator or his clothes.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved rocking-stand with a carboy on it, the stand being in the upright position. Fig. 2is a side elevation, the stand being tilted or rocked over to tilt the carboy so as to pour out its contents; and Fig. 3 is a plan vieW.`
A is the carboy, and Bis the stand; said stand is provided with rockers C at one side, extending as high, or thereabout, as the top of the carboy when setting on the stand. The
l stand and rockers may be constructed in any approved Way; but the Way I prefer consists of a couple of stand-plates, B, with rockerextensions G, cast together in metal, and connected by cross-bars B, the top of the standf plates and the side of the rockers fronting the carboy being formed on righty lines E, at right angles to each other, to correspond with the shape of the carboy-frame or case, so that as the rockers swing down under the carboy they will receive and support said carboy; and I propose to have little stud-points, F, on the rockers, to enter the Wood case of the carboy and prevent the latter from sliding olf in ease the upper part is tilted down beyond a horizontal line; but I do not limit myself to any particular construction or arrangement of the stand, the essential object being to provide a rocking-stand for carboys, on which they can be set temporarily to be emptied and tilted or rocked over upon one side in a gentle and regular Way, so as to avoid spilling the acid, the
stand being so that it Will of .itself remain upright with the carboy on it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A stand for carboys provided with rockers, so arranged that a carboy resting on the stand can be tilted sufficiently to pour out the contents by turning it on the rockers, but Will of itself remain upright with a carboy on it, substantially as specified.
