Be it known that 1, lsanonn MICHAEL Gonnsrniw, a citizen ci the United States, residing at New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State ot' Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Pocket Clips, ci which the tollow'- ing is a speciiication. y

My invention relates to improvements in pocket clips ot the form that is adapted to cooperate with a spring clip on a fountain pen or lead pencil for engaging with the front wall ot a pocket for holding the pen or pencil in place and preventing loss thereoli, and the object of my improvement is to produce a pocket clip that is adapted to be positioned on the said iront wall of the pocket, has holding means for holding in place, and is provided with a socket iior reeiving the ball or holding tip portion oit the spring clip, and which, furthermore, is made ci' metal, whereby improved and relatively positive means are providedfor holding the spring clip than is the case under ordinary and common conditions of use in' which the spring clip engages with the fabric of the pocket wall.

My improved pocket clip 1G is adapted to be mounted on the iront border wall 11 of the pocket or", a garment and is constructed and arranged so as to be adapted to cooperate with a spring clip 12 that is itself mountpocket ed on a fountain pen 13 or a pencil in the usual nninner and-which is usually engaged when in use directly with the said front wall 11 Jfor holding` the said pen or pencil in place against accidental displacei'nent or loss, whereby a part of the pocket clip is interposed between the spring clip and the pocket wall 11.

Heretofore, under conditions of use, with pen 13 entered for an appreciable extent in the pocket. a portion thereof will extent` above the pocket wall 11; the spring" clip 12 11 directly; and, furthermore, the said 'free end'may be provided with aball or knob 16 that is adapted to be embedded into the material oi the fabric that constitutes the said front pocket wall 11. e

rlhere are, however, objections to this arrangement, in that the pen or pencil may be gradually displaced and iinally lost, and

without warning and other objections, and

these are overcome by my improvement, which involves the provision of a socket 17 of metal or other suitable material, other than fabric, on the pocket wall 11 for receiving the ball 16, and the. sans for doing this are as follows The pocket clip 10 is made of sheet metal, the blank being in the form oi an elongated strip that is bent adjacent the middle to provide two arms, comprising the Jfront arm 18 and the rear arm 19, and which are spaced vsuitably to receive the material of the pocket wall 11 therebetween and to resiliently engage with the said material.

Preferably, in use, the junction `portion 2O at the upper end intermediate the arms 1S and 19 will rest on or be adjacent the top edge 21 of the pocket wall 11. As shown, the front arm 18 has at the lower tip end a rearwardly directed prong 22 that is adapted tol be embedded into the material of the pocket wall 11 for positively positioning the pocket clip 10.

The ball receiving socket 17 isv formed by suitably indenting the material ot the front arm 18 towards the rear. i

l prefer to provide as shown, in the rear arm 19 an opening 23 in registration with the socket 17 that is adapted to receive the generally concave rear wall portion of the said socket 17 with the material of the holding eiiect by reason of the deflection of said material.
