AUGUST nr nonnro,

iinUIir-JAR HOLDER.
Application filed April 5,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST D1 LoRE'ro,
a citizen ofthe'United States, residing at Ravenna, in the county of Portageand State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Fruit-Jar Holder, of which the following'is a specification. I a
This invention aims to provide novel means for holding a glass fruit jar whilst the cover is-being threaded thereon, it being a matter of common knowledge that a fruit jar often breaks during the mounting of the cover, the operator being injured if the jar'is held in the hands. I
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and toenhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains. lVith the above and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of cpmstruction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1 1
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in top plan, a device constructed in accordance with'the invention, parts being broken away; Figure? is a side elevation; Figure 3-. is a front elevation wherein parts are broken away.
The device forming the'subject matter of this invention includes a bracket comprising a standard 1 having an outwardly project ing fixed jaw 2 and suppliedwith a foot 3 located below the jaw 2, a clamping screw 4 being threaded into the foot 3 and being adapted to cooperate with the fixed'jaw 2.. At its upper end, the standard 1 is supplied with a transverse head5. There'are openings 6 in the head 5, the openings being elongated longitudinally of the head 5. A feed screw 7 is threaded into the head 5. An operating handle 8 is secured at 9 to the outer end of the feed screw 7. J
The numeral 10 denotes an arched or U- shaped yoke 10, the ends of the yoke passing through the slots 6 in the head 5, andterminating in eyes 11, adapted to receive removable securing elements 12, to the end that the yoke may be held detachably' on the head5'.
The yoke 10 is disposed in a plane. approxi- 192 2. .Serial No. 549,688.
mately at right angles'to the standard 1.;
The bend of the yoke lOcarriesa tubular cushion 14:, which may b fashioned. Outof I rubber; or any other suitable material.
The numeral 15 marks-a movable jaw pro vided in its ends with slots '18, receiving the side portions of jaw thus being mounted slidably'o'n the yoke, for movement" toward and away from the curved intermediate portion of the. yoke. The central portionof the movable jaw 15 is enlarged to form a bodylti. Aseat 17 is the yoke 10,. the movable i I formed in the rear edge of the body 16 and is adapted to receive the forward end of the feed screwi7. In the forward edge of the body 16, aconoaved recess 19 is formed; A. cushion strip 20 made of rubber orjany other.
desired material is mounted in the recess '19 and is held therein by such as a screw.v Owing to the fact that the 'movable jaw 15 includes the enlarged body 16, the j aw is not weakened by-the formation of the seat 17 and the. recess 19. c
Inpractical operation, the bracket is held I on the edge of the table or other object,- by
a securing device 21,!
means of the jaw Qan'd the clamping screw. 1-. The fruit jar whichis to be sealedis placed within the contour of the yoke 10.
.in engagement with the cushion 14:. The
jaw. 15 is advanced through' the instrument tality of the feed screw 7 untilthe jar is clamped betweenthe cushion 14.- and the cushion 20 onthejaw. 15. Thus, the jar is held mechanically, without danger of break ing and the cover may be'mounted on the jar, the operator beingin no dangerof in jury, should the jar break, since the jar is not held in the hands of the operator;
What is claimed is:- p V 1. In a device of theclassdescribed, a
standard; means for mounting the standard ona support; an arched yoke; a jaw slidable' on the yoke, the yoke terminating in eyes, the standard and the jaw having openings of sufficient size to permit the-eyes to pass therethrough; securing devices mounted inthe eyes and cooperating with the standard to hold the yoke on the standard; and means carried by thestandard forl'advancing the I jaw with respect tothe yoke. 2.111 a device of the class described; a
bracket; means for mounting the bracket on a support; a 'yoke'carried by thebra cket; a cushion on the intermediate portion of the yoke; a jaw slidable on the yoke,and encushion mounted in the recess and cooperateing with the cushion on the yoke.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my sigma-i ture in the presence of two Witnesses.
