To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL P. HARTMAN, a citizen-of the United States, residing at KansasCity, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Can Holding and Opening Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to can holding and opening devices, and the objects of my in vcntion are, first, to provide a cheap, durable and eflicient holding and opening device for hermetically sealed cans and ars, second, to provide clamping jaws with can supporting flanges toreceive and hold cans of different sizes during the openingprocess, third, to
provide an adjustable opening device and, fourth, to provide the opening device with a two-edged blade adapted to cut forwardly and backwardly, and slidably mounted on the opening devlce.
I attain these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1, is a side elevation of the device in operative position; Fig. 2, is a top plan view of the device; Fig. 3, is a side elevation of the opening device and showing the two-edged blade; Fig. i, is a top plan view of the device and showing the opening device operative in cutting the top of a can, and, Fig. 5, is a rear elevation of'the device and showing the slideway and slide member in the supporting leg to vertically adjust the opening device.
Similar numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The numeral 1, indicates a table fragment. 2, is an attaching device, which is provided with a U-shaped yoke 3, having a pressscrew 4, mounted in its lower limb, and which is adapted to press upwardly against the lower side of the table top to hold the device hereinafter described, in place. Av bracket 5, is formed integral with the upper limb of the yoke 3, and a. hole 6, is apertured horizontally therein, and the hole providedwith internal screw threads, the horizontally disposed shelf 7, of the bracket being dimensioned and adapted to receive and rigidly support a jaw 8, provided with an elliptically-shaped inwardly projecting horizontally disposed supporting flange 9, on its lower edge, the terminal portions of said flange being depressed to lie in a plane lower Specification of Letters Patent.

A jaw 12, having verti callyextending sides, similar to the sides of the jaw 8, but extending in the form of a circle, is provided with an inwardly projecting horizontally disposed supporting flange 13, which is fixed on its lower edge and adapted to register with the flange 9, and to bear upon the upper sides of the supporting arms 10 and 11, and slide thereon. A standard 14, is attached to the rearward side of the jaw 12,'and is extended downwardly to the table top, its lower end being turned inwardly and upwardly to form a foot 15, which is adapted to slide on the tablewith a minimum of friction. A hole 16, is apertured in the standard in such a manner that it will register with the hole 6, in the-bracket. A rod 17, provided with screw-threads on its outer end, is entered in the holes 6, and 16, the screw end of the rod being engaged by the internal screw threads in the hole 6. Col lars 18, are mounted on the rod at opposite sides of the standard and are adapted to hold the rod attached to the standard and movable therein. A crank 19, is mounted on the outer end of the rod to turn the latter. A slideway 20, is formed longitudinally in the standard 14:, in which slideway a slide member 21, is slidably mounted. An inwardly extending arm 22, is hingedly mounted on the upper end of the slide member 21, and is provided with a longitudinally extending slotted aperture 23, in which slot a puncturing center punch 24, is slidably mounted, the upper end of the punch being provided with an anvil 25, which is adapted to receive pressure to force the punch to puncture the top of a can disposed therebelow. An arm 26, is pivotally mounted on the upper end of the punch, between the anvil and the upper side of the arm 22, and is provided with a longitudinally extending slotted aperture 27, in which slot, a blade 28, is slidably mounted. The blade 28, is provided below the arm 26, with oppositely disposed cutting edges 29 and 30, and with a handle 31, attached to its upper end, above the arm.
The device constructed as I have above described provides convenient and ever" ready means for simultaneously holding and opening a sealed can, and which is operated as follows: The jaws are separated by turning the crank 19, to the left, which action presses the jaw 12, outwardly from the jaw sure applied to the blade, will serve to cut S, the former jaw sliding on the supporting arms 10 and 11, the standard 14, sliding in the same direction on the table top. A sealed can 32, is lodged on the flanges 9 and 13, and the jaws forced to clamp the can by turning the crank 19, to the right. The arms 22 and 26, are swung over and upon the top of the can, the sl-idemember being raised to admit of this action. The punch 24, is moved in the slot 23, in the arm 22, to the approximate center of the can top, when a suitable pressure is applied to the anvii 25, to force the punch through the can top. The blade 28, is then moved in the slot 27 in the arm 26, to the point at which the can top is to be cut, and either a pushing or a pulling presprovides eflicient means to clamp in the device cans ofdifie'rent diameters, ranging from the maximum capacity of the jaw 12 to and below the same.
