G. A. ALMORTH.
TOILET SEAT.
FILED MAY T111920.
Patented den. 9, i223.
innran srarss earner rornn'r sna'r.
Application filed May 7, 1920. Serial No. 379,490.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gusrnv A. in MORTH, a citizen of the United States. residing at Wallingtord, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toilet Seats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to in toilet seats. 1
It is the object of the invention to provide a toilet seat particularly adapted to be used in connection with a chamber or a standard size toilet seat in orderthat small children may sit thereon.
t is also an object of the invention to provide in connection with said seat a pin rality of novelly constructed supporting members by which said seat may be attached to chambers and toilet seats otdifferent shapes and sizes.
lhe invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a toilet seat embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an underneath plan View of a portion of the seat illustrating one of the supporting members attached thereto;
Fig. 1 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail section taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. a;
Fig. 6 is a view illustrating the method of attaching my improved seat to a small chamber; l i
Fig. 7 is a view illustrating the method of attaching the seat to a large chamber;
Fig. 8 is a view illustrating the method of attaching the seat to a larger toilet seat.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings: 10 represents a toilet seat constructed in any desired shape and of any suitable material. Fast to the underside of the seat 10 at any desired location thereon are a plurality of straps 11, each suitably bent to provide a passage 12 in which a supporting member 13 may be inserted in order that said member may be adjustably attached to said seat. The straps an improvement 11 are preferably formed from a single piece of sheet material and-are so bent that the wall of the passage 12 is inclined toward the sides 01" said passage at 1 1 in order that when the supporting members are inserted therein, said members may be more securely held. A plurality of lips 15 are formed in tegral with the strap 11 being bent inwardly therefrom and being located preferably adjacent to the sides of the passage and projccting from the inclined portion 1 1. There may be any desired number of the lips 15 and said lips may be or" any desired shape.
The supporting members 13 are preferably formed of spring wire bent to form a pair of approximately parallel arms 16, each having a downwardly projecting portion 17 preferably at right angles thereto, then being bent at18 and terminating in a curved upwardly extending portion 19, the extremity of which joins at 20 with the adjacent curved portion 19. The under side of each of the arms 16 is provided with a plurality of notches 21 into which the lips 15 of the straps 11 are adapted to project. The upper and under sides of the arm 16 may be flattened slightly at 22 and 23 if it isso desired. In attaching the supporting members 13 to the seat 10, the arms .16 are sprung toward each other until the ends 2 1 thereof contact with each other and the said arms are then inserted within the passage 12 and pushed inwardly through the central portion of the passage 12 until properly located. Upon being released the arms will spring apart and be forced against the inclined portions 14: ofthe strap 11 and he wedged thereagainst, the lips 15 simultaneously entering the notches 21 and thereby securely locking the supporting member within the passage 12 and preventing longitudinalmovement thereof.
My improved toilet seat may be used in a number of diiterent ways and in Figure 6 the said seat is illustrated as being mounted upon a chamber A with the arms 16 of the supporting members resting upon the top edge a thereof and the portion 17 proiecting downwardly upon the outside thereof and thereby positioning the seat 10 zggainst lateral movement upon said cham- In Figure 7 the seat is illustrated mounted upon a chamber B and in this instance the curved portion 19 of the supporting mem ber 13 is illustrated resting upon the curved upper inner edge I) of said chamber and thereby preventing lateral movement of said seat upon said chamber.
In Figure 8 the seat is illustrated mounted upon a large toilet seat 0, the curved portion 19 of the supporting member 13 in this instance resting upon a curved inner surface 0 of the seat and thereby preventing lateral movement of the auxiliary seat 10 upon the seat C. I
It will thus be noted that my improved seat may be adjustably attached to a chamber or toilet seat of any size in order that the same may be utilized by small children who could not otherwise sit thereon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire by Letters Patent to secure is:
1. In combination, a member, a strap adapted to be attached to said member and adapted to co-operate therewith to form a passage therebetween, said passage having a wall inclined toward'opposite sides thereof, said inclined portions of said wall having lips formed integral therewith, and a supporting member embodying therein parallel arms adapted to be inserted within said passage, each of said arms having notches therein into which said lips are adapted to lock to prevent longitudinal movement of said supporting member relatively to said strap.
2. In combination, a member, a strap adapted to be attached to said member and adapted to co-operate therewith to form a passage therebetween, said passage having a wall inclined toward opposite sides thereof, said wall having lips formed integral therewith and a supporting member embodying therein arms adapted to be sprung together and inserted within said passage and upon being released spring into engagement with said inclined wall and be wedged thereagainst, each of said arms having notches therein into which said lips are adapted to lock to prevent longitudinal movement of said supporting member relatively to said strap.
3. In combination, amember, a strap adapted to be attached to said member and adapted to co-operate therewith to form a passage therebetween, said passage having a wall inclined toward opposite sides thereof, said inclined portions of said wall having lips formed integral therewith, and a supporting member embodying therein parallel arms adapted to be sprung together and inserted within said passage and upon being released spring into engagement with the opposite inclined portions of said wall and be wedged thereagainst, each of said arms having notches therein into'which said lips are adapted to lock to prevent longitudinal movement of said supporting member relatively'to said strap, said arms also having downwardly extending portions adapted to engage the rim of a receptacle or the like and thereby prevent lateral displacement of said first-mentioned member upon said receptacle. 4C. In combination, a member, a strap'attached to said member and adapted to cooperate therewith to form a passage therebetween, said passage havinga wall inclined toward each side thereof, said inclined portions of said wall having lips formed integral therewith and a supporting member embodying therein parallel arms adapted to be sprung together and insertedwithin said passage and upon being released spring into engagement with the opposite inclined portions of said wall and be wedged between said Wall and said first-mentioned member, each of said arms having notches therein into which said lips are adapted to lock to prevent longitudinal movement of said supporting member relatively to said strap, said arms terminating in a curved portion adapted to engage the inner edge of a stationary support and thereby prevent displacement of said first-mentioned member upon said support. I v
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
