Be it known that l, l/VILLrAM Monnrson, a citizen of the United States, and resident oi Troy, in the county of Rensselaerand State oi' New York, have invented certain newand useiiul improvements in a Brush, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specilication.

This invention relates/to a class of brushing devices, and has tor its object primarily to provide a back of a type whereby a plate of cementitious material with bristles will be held to the back against accidental displacement to enable hair brushes, clothes brushes and the like to be manufactured for being,` sold at moderate prices, and-which may be made especially of forms representing expensive brushes with ornamental backs of metal and other sheet material. The invention resides mainly in the provision of a back made of sheet metal or other sheet material which is stamped or pressed to provide in one of its 'faces a recess. On the bottom of the recess is a retainer which may be in the form of a band of round wire soldered or otherwise fastened on the plate to provide one or' more spaced annular grooves, and on the wall ot the recess are spaced clips preferably in the forms oi strips or flanges which overhang the edge of the plate interiorly of the recess in spaced relation to its wall to provide spaced. grooves on the wall. The plate of cementitious material with bristles is secured to the back by the retainers 'and clips being' embedded in the plate which is applied in plastic state in the recess ol the back so that the material. enters the grooves of the back.

A further object of the inventiton is to provide a brush of a simple and eliicient construction which may be made in any suitable size and shape.

Vlith these and other objects in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and will then be pointed out in the claims at the end of the description.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is an inverted plan of the back adapted to be employed for making one form of my improved brush.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view, partly in detail, taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and

Fig. 3 is a transverse section, partly in `detail.l taken through one form of the complete brush.

The brush has a bach 10` which may be of any suitable shape and size, though the form ot the baclrillustrated is substantially oval, and the back may be made of sheet metal, Celluloid or other appropriate sheet material. This brush being designed to represent expensive ornamental metal back brushes l preferably make the back 10 of sheet metal which is cutJ into a plate of the desired shape and then stamped or otherwise formed with a recess or .concavity 11 in one of its faces by bending or curving the edge of the plate to provide a wall, as 12. The face of the plate opposite to the recess 11 maybe fanciiully embossed or ornamented if desired.

On the bottom of the rec-ess 11 of the back in spaced relation to the wall 12 is a retainer 13 which may consist of a circular or oval shaped band or ring ci round wire being soldered or otherwise fastened to the bottom of the recess. By making the retainer `or band ot round metal wire and by properly soldering` it to the back the spaces between the back and the wire at both of its lengthwise sides provide spaced annular grooves.y as 111 and 15.

Interiorly of the recess 11 of the back and on the free edge of the wall 12 may be one or a number of spaced clips, as 16. rlhese clips are preferably of similar formations, and each clip may be in the 'form of a strip or flange of metal. The clips or strips are arranged lengthwise of the wall 12 of the back, and one edge of each strip is soldered or otherwise secured to the free edge `of the wall so that all ot the strips are disposed on inclines toward the center of the recess in spaced relation lto the wall to provide a groove, as 17, between each strip and the wall of the recess. rlhe grooves 14, 15, 17 are thereby in communication with the recess.

rlhe form of brush provided by the employment of this back consists of a plate, as 18, oi' cementitious material of any well known or preferred formula, and the bristles 19 of the brush are embedded in the plate so as to protrude therefrom. The plate when formed and while in a state of plasticity is pressed into the recess 11 of the back, and by exercising suiiicient pressure the material of the plate will be caused to enter the l.grooves 14, 15. 17 as well as causing the retainer 13 and clips 16 to be el bedded in the plete.` Thus l provide a brush which is susceptible of being made in ornamental and very attractive designs as Well es being made to sell at a inodemte price.
