To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. VVEYAND, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain Improvement in rittachments for Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in attachments for containers, particularly those containers formed of fibrous material such as pasteboard, and adapted for containing merchandise, such as stationery, confections, etc., and wherein the area of the cover conforms exactly to the area'of the body of the container and when in closed position bears on the upper edge of the body, but in reality telescopic therewith by embracing a flange or neck formed of a strip of fibrous material disposed on the inner. surface of the body and flanking the sides and ends thereof, and operating to prevent lateral displacement of the cover. The cov er of this type of container, has hitherto lacked stability to withstand pressure, especially during shipment and when filled with merchandise, in which instance the containers are piled one upon the other in a packing case with the result that pressure exerted on the covers of the lower containers, by those above, operates to cause the flange of these to spread and overlap the upper edges of the bodies and result in splitting the covers and the flanges at the corners thereof. This renders the containers unsightly and objectionable to the purchaser.
Goming now to the present invention, the general object thereof is to provide reinforcements for the cover flanges of the type of containers above referred to which will operate to positively prevent lateral spreading of said flanges and the telescoping tb ereof with the top of the containers. To this end the invention resides in a brace which is adapted to provide a bearing surface and a. coping to bear on the outer face of the cover flange together with a relatively thin depending extension which is adapted to be inserted between the body of the container and the flange or neck thereof and a shoulder connecting the coping with the tongue and disposed so as to off-set the coping outwardly and in spaced relation to the outer face of the flange or neck so that space is provided for the insertion of the cover flange there- 1921. into, in which position the cover flange will engage the coping and will be prevented from having outward lateral movement when pressure is exerted on the cover. Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of the invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part thereof and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container showing a plurality of braces assoeiated therewith.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view through one corner of the containers and one of the braces and showing the cover in open position.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing the cover in closed position.
Figure l is a perspective view of one of the braces detached.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a blank from which the brace shown in Figure 4C is formed.
In the drawings the numeral 5 designates the body of a fibrous container and 6 indieates a flange cover therefor. A strip of fibrous material is disposed on the inner surface of the body 5 and against the sides and ends thereof and projects above the upper edge of the body to provide a flange or neck 7, .adapted to telescope with the cover 6 when the latter is in closed position. The cover may be hinged, in any suitable manner, to the body 5 or, if desired, be detachable therefrom. The body 5 is provided with a plurality of braces 8 which are located, respectively, adjacent the corners of the body and are provided with offset copings 9 which lie in spaced relation to the flange or neck 7 and form therewith recesses for receiving the flanges on the cover 6, when the latter is in closed position, as shown in Figures 1 and 3, the said copings being adapted to bear against the flange on the cover 6 and prevent outward spreading of the flange when pressure is exerted on the cover.
The braces 8 are identical in construction, hence a description of one will suffice for all. As shown in Figure 4 the brace is formed from a single blank of metal, a plan of the blank being shown in Figure 5, and has one end restricted to provide a thin wedge shaped extension 10, for insertion between the body of the container 5 and the flange or neck 7, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the other'end of the blank being bent to provide a connecting shoulder 11, for the coping 9. The shoulder 11 rests on the upper edge of the wall of the container and supports the brace against downward movement. The coping 9 and the shoulder 11 may be formed on the blank by a suitable die, in a single or plurality of operations as may be desired. The braces may be colored to conform to the color of the container and in this manner rendered practically invisible.
While the drawing discloses a rectangular shaped container with braces at only one side thereof, it will, nevertheless, be understood thatln'aces may be positioned at both sides and ends of the container, and that the braces will effectively operate on containers of other shape than shown in the drawing.
From the foregoingit will have been observed that the braces 8 will effectively reinforce the cover flanges against outward movement, when a plurality of containers are piled one upon the other, and prevent splitting of the flanges.

A container formed of fibrous material and consisting of a body having an inner ofi'set flange, a flanged cover for engaging over the flange on the body and a brace for engaging the flange on the cover and having a portion extending between the body and the olfset flange.
2. A container formed of fibrous material having an inner ofl'set flange at the upper edge thereof, a flanged cover for engaging over the offset flange on the body, and a brace interposed between the offset flange and the body and having an offset portion for engaging the flange on the cover.
A container formed of fibrous material and consisting of telescoping body and cover portions, the body having on its inner face an upstanding flange offset from the edge of the body and the cover embracing the flange and extending to the upper edge of the body, a brace having a portion interposed between the flang'e'and the body and another portion bearing on the upper edge of the body, and an upstanding coping con nected to the last named portion and bearing on the outer face of the cover flange.
4. A brace having a restricted wedge shape portion insertable between the body and upstanding flange of the container portion of a box, an integral shoulder portion adapted to bear on the upper edge of the body and an upstanding coping cooperating with the said flange of the container to rovide a socket for the reception of one of the cover flanges of said box.
