Description

w. s. TAYLOR.
Skirts.
No, 143,198, Patented September23,l873.
WITNESSES,
INVENTOR,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. TAYLOR, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKIRTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,1$, dated September 23, 1873; application filed June 3, 1873. 4
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. TAYLOR, of the city of Brooklyn, county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain Improvementsin Ladies Skirts, of which the following is a specification:
This invention pertains to the class of wearing apparel styled as ladies skirts, and it consists in the peculiar manner of cutting the material to form the skirt, and in the application of the band to surround the waist, and thereby fasten the skirt upon the body in such a manner that the usual necessity of plaits, gathers, &c., are dispensed with in making the skirt hang smoothly from the waist and over the hips, and without being drawn out of shape in continued use.
The plan or side View of the skirt, as here shown folded together, illustrates the form of cutting the material to accomplish the desired object and it consists in cutting the breadths of a tapering form toward the top and not so wide as at the bottom, and then forming the upper end upon the arc of a circle precisely as in the formation-of a sheet of metal to make a funnel or the formation of a circular cape. To the upper end of the said breadths, or that which formsthe skirt proper, is attached the band, which is also cut with the same curvature as the upper end of the skirt, and to the greater are of said band, or its lower edge, is joined the upper endof the skirt, and within the upper or smaller are of the band is formed a cord or draw-strin g, as shown at A, in which tapes or cords may be fastened to adjust the band around the waist, and to draw it in slightly if too large, and by tying said cords or tapes the skirt is fastened and held. around the Waist. The formation of the upper end of the skirt in the arc of a circle and the band to correspond therewith, as shown in the drawings, constitute in their combination the invention, as the band fits snugly around the taper of the waist, or is funnel-shaped, with the mouth of funnel downward, and to the lower edge of which the skirt proper is attached, which is also cut to fit in the same manner, and thereby give room for the expanded portion of the body below the waist. The draw strings or cords, as at B B, may be attachednear the center, so that the back portion of the skirt will be gathered if too large to fit exactly around the waist.
Such a form of cutting the skirt and applyinga band to correspond is very useful in all kinds of ladies underskirts, whatever the kind of material used may be, as it saves material in its manufacture and weight ,to the user, and permits the outer dress to lie smoothly over the body below the waist, if desired.
1 therefore claim-- As a new article of manufacture, askirt provided with the circular band A, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose'specified.
WILLIAM S. TAYLOR.
