UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ISAAC HUssEY, OF IRONTON, 01110.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRUSH WASH-BOARDS AND ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,853, dated September 16, 1873 application filed June 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC HUSSEY, of Ironton, in the county of Lawrence and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brush Wash-Board and Roller; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, refer;
- ence being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved brush wash-board. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through the line 00 00, Fig.1. Fig. 3 is a detail section of the brush-roller.
My invention relates to the application of bristle-brushes in the operation of washing clothes. Heretofore the bristles have been applied upon the periphery of rolls which, rotatin g upon the clothes placed between them, carried the articles through by contact-friction. As, however, both rolls moved, the rubbing-friction was found to be too slight to entirely effect the object in view.
To overcome this objection I employ a roller that is made both to rotate and reciprocate over the clothes, which are themselves spread upon a stationary subjacent brush, as hereinafter described.
A represents a stationary brush, made of about the size of the corrugated or rubbing part of an ordinary wash-board. To the edges of the brush is attached a frame, 13, whose side bars extend a little below the lower edge of the brush A to serve as feet. part of the frame 13, above the upper edge of the brush A, is formed a recess or compartment to receive the soap. (3 is a small wooden cylinder, with radial holes to receive the bristles D. The journals of the cylinder (3 work in eyes in the ends of the wire-bail E, to the middle part of which is attached a handle, F, as shown in Fig. 3.
' In using the machine the article is spread upon the brush A, and the roller-brush G 1) E F moved gently up and down upon it, said brush being immersed in the suds between each downward and upward movement.
The brush-roll D maybe operated by hand, as shown, by hand mechanism, or by power applied in any suitable manner my invention consisting in the application of rotary and reciprocating motion to one brush and holding the other rigid and'stationary.
