To all, whom it may concern Be it known that l, Fnnwois H. WiLLiAMs,
a citizenof the United States, and resident of Boston, county of Suffolk, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Pliers, of which the following description, in connection with the accon'ipanying drawings, is a specification, like characshown the invention is embodied in a parallel-jaw type ofpliers. A principal object of the invention is to so modify the jaws of a pair of pliers or like tool that the tool is well adapted to serve also as a hand rise to hold small articles requiring filing or other machining. In accordance with my invention the jaws are so modified as to provide adequate clearance for a file or oth r operatingtool in working on a piece clamped in the plier jaws, and by reason of the modified form of such jaws, the workpiece may be held securely in a diagonal or inclined position therein without requiring more than a shallow or narrow bite of the jaws upon the work piece. A further object is to provide means cooperating with the plier handles adapted to hold the jaws in clamping engagement with a workpiece as long as may be needed without requiring manual pressure upon the handles for this purpose. The form going and other objects and advantages of the invention will more clearly appear from the following detailed description. and the distinctive features of novelty will be there after pointed out in the appended claims.

indicates a pair of pliers which may be of any usual or suitable construction, being herein shown as a parallel-jaw type with handles 10 10 pivoted together at 10 and connected with the respective parallel-jaws 10 10*. The jaws l0 1O have their eirtremities beveled off at one corner as indicated at 11. This is for the purpose of permitting a secure and reliable grip upon a workpiece with'only a narrow or shallow hold thereon as fully explained in my prior application. N0. 386,276, filed June s, 1920. As ee plained in said earlier application, this bow cling off of the jaw corners is of great benefit and advantage for a variety of uses, such as engaging relatively thin nuts lying'close to a backing surface and in caseswhere the bolt through which the nut passes projects to a considerable extent therefrom. In the use ofthe tool to engage a workpiece extending diagonally with respect thereto, these beveled corners provide a greatly increased area of grasping surface, thereby giving a firmer hold on the workpiece with a relatively narrow engagement of the jaws upon the workpiece. As further explained in said earlier application, the invention as applied to a plier tool isof value and importance in rendering the pliers adaptable for use as a hand vise to clamp and hold workpieces without requiring more than a narrow grip thereon, for filing or othei-"niachining. l. have found that in adapting the invention to this use,.the tool is rendered'better adaptable for operating on workpieces that project only a small distance from the jaws, bv having an edge of one of the jaws beveled off backward from' the corner bevel.
Such a beveled edgc is indicated at 12 on the-upper face 0f a right hand jaw, this being the form suitable for right handed users and affording clearance for a file F or like tool in the right hand ofthe user while he is grasping the pliers with his left hand. For left handed users the top face of the other jaw might of course be correspondingly beveled off. It is to be observed that neither this bevel 12 of the jaw H nor the bevel 11 of the extremity is suficient to appreciably weaken or impair the strength of the jaws, while it renders the tool adaptable for most or all of the uses to which the ordinary hand vice is adapted. By reference to Fig. 5 it will be noted that a workpiece W clamped in an inclined position in the jaws of the pliers requires to project only a relatively small extent above the beveled corners 11 for the action of the file thereon, since the beveled edge 12 affords clearance to permitthe file F or other tool to be adjusted through considerable angles with respect to the work. My invention also contemplates thelprovision of suitable means engageable with the handles for holding the jaws clamped upon a workpiece without manual effort. For this purpose I show a ,;threaded]stem 13pivoted at 14 to one of the jaws and equipped with a .knurled nut 15 engageable with the outer side oil the other hand'le, whereby upon setting up this nut 1O "engaged with acworkpiece.
