Description

HAND VISE.
APPLICATION FILED FEB, 28, 1921.

WALTER, G. sentiti, or Bosron. MassacreUsar'rs1- HAND vise.
To allee/wm it may concern.: y
Be it known that l, "WALTER Gr. Sanitair, of
Boston, in the countyfof'Sutlolk and lState of Massachusetts, a `citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful lmprovement in Hand Vises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in band vises whereby the movable jaw is ei'labled to grasp the work more securely and hold it more iirmly than any such vise of which I have knowledge, because the opposing faces of the jaw are maintained in parallel relation and hence clamp the work with equal force wherever the jaws touch it.
My invention will be understood by reference to the drawings in which it is shown in its preferred form.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a vise embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2,'2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a lan.
Figs. 4 anc'F are sections on lines 4-4 and respectively, of Fig. 2.
My invention comprises a stationary jaw which is l shaped in side elevation, 1 being the aw proper and 2 a base having a longitudinal slot 3 therein and a longitudinal groove 31 on its under side. `llioinovable member comprises a movable jaw 4, a. base or slide piece 5 therefor and a clamp o, these parts being held on the base 2 of the stationary jaw by a bolt 7 the head of which slides in the groove 31, its body passing up through holes in the slide piece 5 and clamp 6, a nut 8 holding` the parts together. The slide vpiece 5 has a guide 9 on its undersurface of sufficient width to fit the slot 3 so as to hold the jaws in parallel relation.
rlhe rear surface of the j aw 4 slants as at 1() and the front face of the slide piece is correspondingly shapedv except at its middle portion where it has a tongue 11 which tits :into a recess in the jaw 4. A pin 12 passing through the slide piece 5 and tongue 11 holds these two parts in proper relation. The pin 12 is preferably cut away as 13 and its ends are slightly smaller than the opening in which they lie so that the jaw 4 may move slightly under pressure with relation to the slide piece. Y
The rear upper face of the slide piece 5 has a groove 14 to receive the ,correspond ingly-shaped tail piece 15 of the clamp 6.
V The front end of the clamp has arms 16 wheh'lie in recesses 17 in the jaw 4, these Specification of Letters Patent.
parts beingso shaped and proportioned that theclamp will' be held normally out of contact with thetop by the slide piece 5 and may be rockedslightly by the tightening of the nut8. y i
in practice the work is placed between the two jaws 1 and 4 and the 'jaw 4 being moved up against the work as closeas may be by hand, the nut 8 is tightened and it bears down onv the clamp 6 it rocks it around its tail piece 15 and the arms'16 depress the j aw 4 so that, as by a cam action, it is driven downwardly and slides on the slanting surface 10 in a. direction toward the stationary jaw 1, the diiference between the diameter ofthe ends of the pin 12 and the openings in the slide piece being suiiicient to allow this movement.
lt will be seen that the clamping of the movable jaw by the bolt and clamp not only holds the slide piece in fixed relation to the base, but also drives the movable jawtoward the stationary aw in a fixed parallel relation thereto because of the cam-shaped surfaces at 10. For this purpose the bottom of the movable jaw 4 in its normal position Aas shown at ldoes not touch the base 2but 1n ay have a slight downward movement with relation thereto.
I do not mean to limit myself to the exact embodiment of my invention shown as it `may be otherwise embodied, so that the movable jaw may loythe same movement be clamped to the base and moved toward the stationary jaw.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A vise comprising a base, a stationary jaw mounted thereon, a vmovable jaw, and means whereby said movable jaw may be clamped to said base and simultaneously moved toward said stationary jaw, said means comprising a slide piece having a cam surface, said movable jaw having a corresponding cam surface, and means for *Patented Jain. 10, 19,22;V Application filed February 28, 1921. Serial No. 448,580.
clamping said jaw against said slide piece and said base.
2. In a vise, a base, a stationary jaw, a movable member adjustably mounted on said base, said movable member comprising a slide piece, a jaw mounted thereon, the .face of said jaw being in parallel relation with the face of said stationary jaw, a clamp andA means for compressing said clamp against said base, said slide piece and said jaw having co-operating surfaces whereby when said movable member is clamped against said base said movable jaw Wil-l be e moved toward said stationaryjlmv.
3. In a viseJ a. base, a sifationaly jaw-hav7` inge holding surface and a movable mem-bel' comprising e slidev piece having'- a Vlace 1 slanting toward Said stationary jaw, a movable jawV having a holding` Sui-face opposite and nvpamllel relation to the hol-ding` sui'- face of Said stationary janv and having a face adapted to engage the s lzmtling face of vsaid slide piece, and means for clamping' said slide piece to said jaw whereby pressure in said 'jaw Will cause it to Slide down said slanting face and its holding surface to approa-ch the opposing holding surface of said to clamp said movable member to said Abase and move Said movable j :1W toward said Sta- WALTER G.
