To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAUDE ELLrs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springville, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Screen and Sash Lockers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window screen or sash locks of the general type shown in United States Letters Patent No. 1,360,628 issued to me llovember 30, 1920.
As illustrated in the patent, devices heretofore proposed for the purpose of locking a screen in position beneath a window sash and locking the sashes together so as to prevent opening of the sash or removal of the screen, have consisted of parts operating on a screw rod or the like so as to be extended or contracted to fit windows of different sizes. lVith such devices, when it is necessary to materially vary the length of the rod for use with different windows or with screens of different sizes, considerable time is required to actuate the parts on the screw rod to lengthen or shorten the clevice. Furthermore, owing to accumulations of dust or other deposits in the threaded rod and the adjusting nuts such devices become very difficult of adjustment and cannot be lengthened or shortened without the use of suitable tools, and the provision of screw rod connections and the like makes the devices relatively expensive.
The objects of this invention are to provide a portable lock consisting of few parts, which is inexpensive of manufacture; also to provide a lock of the type set forth which may be most readily and quickly adjusted to lock window sashes and screens of varying sizes; and also to provide a lock having parts which are freely movable to vary the length of the device and which require no tools for effecting such adjustment. Further objects are to improve window screen and sash locks in the other respects hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention, generally stated, comprises an extensible member consisting of two telescoping parts, one of which parts is provided with a portion adapted to engage a frame of an upper sash of a window and the other part being adapted to engage the frame of a lower sash of a window.' The invention also includes means for releasably securing said telesco ing parts in different positions.
A and designate respectively the up per and lower sashes of a window and C designates a metal or wire screen positioned in the window casing below the lower sash. D designates the frame of the lower sash B,
and E designates the frame of the upper sash A. These parts are of any of the usual well known constructions and form no part of the present invention.
10 and 11 designate the telescoping parts of the improved sash and screen look. In the embodiment illustrated, the member 10 is in the form of a rod, which may be formed of wood, soft metal or other suitable material, and the member 11 is in the form of sleeve or cap member of suitable length arranged to slide upon the rod 10 so as to permit of variations in the length of the locking device. It is preferred to construct the rod 10 of wood so that the rods may be readily cut to the required length. In this manner the devices may be manufactured and sold with wooden rods of one or more standard lengths and an end of the rod trimmed off by the user as necessaryto fit any particular window or according to the height of the screens used. In this manner with the minimum length of the device determined by the amount the rod is trimmed off, the rod may be readily lengthened by adjusting the slidin sleeve 11. The sleeve 11 is adapted to slice freely on the rod 10 so that the device may be most quickly adjusted to the desired length. The sleeve 11 is provided with a laterally projecting finger or tongue 12 which is adapted to engage beneath the frame E of the upper sash. For purposes of providing a most strong and rigid device this finger 12 is preferably rigid or integral with the sleeve 11.
Means are provided for releasably securing the telescoping parts together and preventing relative movement between them in any of their adjusted positions. ferred means for this purpose constitute a thumb screw 13 or the like which projects through and is threaded into the sleeve 11 and engages a portion of the rod within the sleeve. In the preferred. construction shown, the sleeve 11 is provided on one side with a boss i l or lug having a screw threaded opening therethrough, thus providing a threaded opening of materially greater thickness than the walls of the sleeve, for the set screw. The lower end of-the rod 10 engages frame D of the lower sash and is preferably provided with a resilient cushion or button 15 whereby when thedevice is in place the frame will not be marred and at the same time the device will'be prevented from slipping from the frame. Thisresilient cushionor button also permits of easy intentional removel of the locking device from the inside of the window without changing the adjustment of the device, as

resilient cushion being readily compressed to permit disengagement of the finger 12 from the upper sash. The device may like wise be replaced in locking position withoutchanging the adjustment. I claim as my invention: 1. In a sash and screen locking device, the combination of two telescoping members, a rigid laterally projecting integral finger carried by one of said members and adapted to engage a frame of a window sash, and releasable means for securing said members together ,in different'extended positions, an end of the other of said members being adapted to engage the frame of another window sash. In a sash fastener, the combination of a pair of telescoping parts, an integral laterally projecting finger on the outer end of one of said parts, and means for releasably securing said telescoping parts together and preventing relative movements between said parts in different extended positions.
