The advantages of the auxiliary slots are suflicientlyset forth in the Campbell application previously referred to. Since the type-blocks 15 must strike the printingpoint in a vertical line, it is apparent that the type-blocks near the ends of the segment 12 must be turned on their type-bars 10 an increasingly greater degree as they approach the ends of the segment. Such bent type-bars tend to rattle or spring laterally and their efficiency is thus impaired. Theauxiliary guides obviate this objection.

thereby improving the quality of the work.
In the particular construction or embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, of the drawings, and forming a new article of manufacture, the base or attaching portion 20, the upstanding central pair of jaws 25 and the inner members or jaws 19 of the lateral or outer pair of jaws, are all formed integrally or in one piece, whilethe outer jaws 37 of the outer or lateral pair ofjaws form parts of the separate attachable members 36. In the modified construction forming the new article of' manufacture illustrated iii Figures 4 and 5, the auxiliary guides 60, forming the outer or lateral pair of jaws, are carried by the upper ends of and formed in i one piece with the central pair of jaws and with thebase or attaching portion of the device. In both these varieties. of the new article of manufacture, and as hereinbefore particularly described, separate means are provided for independently and relatively adjusting the jaws of each pair to vary the width of the guide-slot formed between the jaws.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.

1. A type-guide for the types of a type writing machine forming a new article of manufacture and comprising a base or attaching portion, a central pair of spaced jaws rising therefrom and forming a central guide-slot, two lateral pairs of spaced jaws carried by the respective jaws of said central pair of jaws and forming lateral guideslots disposed at a radial angle to'the central guideslot and to each other, and separate means for independently relatively adjusting the jaws' of each pair of jaws to vary the width of each of the guideslots.
2. A type-guide for the types of a typewriting machine forming a new article of manufacture and comprising a base or attaching portion, a central pair of spaced aws rising therefrom and forming a. central guide-slot, two lateral pairs of spaced jaws carried by the respective jaws of said cen tral pair of jaws and forming lateral guideslots disposed at a radial angle to the central guide-slot and to each other, and separate means for independently relatively adjusting the jaws of each pair of jaws to vary the width of each of the guide-slots; the base or attaching portion, the central of jaws and the inner jaws of the lateral pairs of jaws all being formed in one piece, and each of the outer jaws of the lat eral pairs of jaws being formed as separate pieces attachable to the respective jaws of the central pair of jaws.
3. In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a central type-guide for the main portion of the type-bars in the system, said central guide being in a line with the types at the printing-point, and said main type-bars having types provided with guiding projections extending therefrom to enter said guide, type-bar guides near the printing-point and at the sides of said central type-guide and auxiliary thereto, to be directly engageable by type-bars at the sides of the system, and means on said central and auxiliary guides for adjusting the width thereof.
4c. said central guide being in a line with the types the printing-point, and said main type bars having types provided with guiding projections extending therefrom toenter said guide, a bracket upon which said central guide is mounted, risers on said bracket extending upward from the cen tral guide at the sides thereof and provided with jaws to form auxiliary guides, one on each side of and above the central gulde and engageable by type-bars at the sides of the system, and means on sald central and auxiliary guides for adjusting the width thereof.
6, In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a central type-guide for the main portion of the type-bars in the system, said central guide being in a line with the types at the printing-point, and said main type-bars having types provided with guiding projections extending therefrom to enter said guide, a bracket upon which said central guide is mounted, risers on said bracket extending upward from the central guide at the sides thereof and provided with aws to form auxiliary guides, one on each side of and above the central guide and engageable by type-bars at the sides of the system, said jaws inclining substantially dially from printing-point, and means on said central and auxiliary guides for adjusting the width thereof.
7. In a front-strike typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a system of pivoted type-bars normally occupying a substantially horizontal position in the arc ofa circle and radiating substantially from the printing-point on the front of the platen in the printing posit-ion of the type-bars, typecarrying type-heads on the forward ends of the type-bars arranged in varying angles thereto for bringing the types into vertical alignment with the printing-point in the printing position of the types, a central type-guide at the front of the platen and having a guide-slot in vertical alignment with the type-heads of the main or middle portion of the type-bars in the system in the printing position of these type-heads, guiding projections extending from the typeheads of said main portion in line with the type-heads to enter the guide-slot of the central type-guide, auxiliary type-guides near the printing-point and at the sides of the central type-guide and having guideslots to be directly entered by the type-bars at the sides of the system and near the typeheads, and separate means for independently adjusting the width of the guide-slots of saidcentral and auxiliary guides.

In a front-strike typewriting'machine, in combination, a platen, a system of pivoted type bars normally occupying a substantially horizontal position in the arc of a circle and radiating substantially from the printing-point on the front of the platen in the printing position of the type-bars, typecarrying type-heads on the forward ends of the type-bars arranged in varying angles thereto, for bringing the types into vertical alignment with the printing-point in the printing position of the types, a central type-guide at the front of the platenand having a guide-slot in vertical alignment with the type-heads of the main or middle portion of the type-bars in the system in the printing position of these type'-heads, guiding projections extending from the typeheads of said main portion in line with the type-heads to enter the guide-slot of the central type-guide, auxiliary type-guides near the printing point and at the sides of the central type-guide and having guide-slots to bedirectlyentered by the type-bars at the sides oi the system and near the type-heads, said type-bars at the sides of the system being provided with flat guiding projections extending directly therefrom to enter the guide-slots of the auxiliary type-guides, and separate means for independently adjusting the Width of the guide-slots of said central and auxiliary guides.
9. in a front-strike typewriting machine having a platen, a system of pivoted typeburs normally occupying a substantially horizontal position in the are of a circle and radiating substantially from the printingpoint on the front of the platen in the print ing position of the type-bars, said type-bars carrying types at their forward ends; in combination with a type-guide comprising an attaching base fixed on the machine, a central pair oi spaced jaws rising from the attaching base and forming a substantially vertical central. guide-slot for the types carried by the main or middle, portion of the type-bars in the system, two lateral pairs of spaced aws carried by the respective jaws of: said central pair of jaws and forming width of. the guide-slot formed thereby.

In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a central. type-guide for the main portion of. the type-bars in the system, said central guide being in a line'with the types attheprinting-point, and said main type-bars havingtypes provided with guidingprojections extending therefrom to on tersaid guide, type-bar guides near the printing-point and at the sides of said central typeguide and auxiliary thereto, to be directly engageable by type-bars at the sides of the system, said side type-bars having' bends at their'type ends, said auxiliary guides being engageable by said type-bars between. said bends and the type-bar pivots, and means on said central and auxiliary guides for adjusting the width thereof.
11.111 a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a central type-guide for the main portion of the type-bars in the system, said central guide being in a line with the types at the printing-point, andsaid main 'typebar s having types provided with guiding projections extending therefrom t6 enter said guide, a bracket upon which said central guide is mounted, riserson said bracket forming the central guide and provided with jaws to form auxiliary guides, one on eachside of the central guide and engageable by type-bars at the sides of the system, and means 'onsaid central and auxilia-ry guides for adjusting the Width thereof.

In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a central type-guide for the main portion of thetype-bars in the system, said central guide being in a line with the types at the printingpoint, and said main type-bars having types provided with guiding projections extending therefrom to enter said guide, a bracket upon which said central guide is mounted, risers on said bracket "forming the central guide and provided with jaws to form auxiliary guides, one on each side of the central guide and engageable by type-bars at' th'e sides of the system, said jaws inclining substantially radially from the printing-point, and means on said central and auxiliary guides for adjusting the width thereof.

In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a bracket fixed to said machine, risers forming a central type-guide and also forming lower jaws, oneon either side of said guide, members adapted to be attached to said risers and forming upper jaws, said lower and upper jaws co-operating to form auxiliary guides, one to either side of the central guise, each of said guides co-operating with certain of the type-bars, and means for adjusting said members on the risers to *ary the distance between the upper and lower jaws.

In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system oi pivoted ype-bars, of a bracket fixed to said machine, a central type-guide on the bracket comprising spaced jaws forming a central guideslot, risers on said bracket, one on either side of and forming the central guide and also forming lower jaws, members adapted to be attached to said risers and forming upper jaws, said upper and lower jaws cooperating to form auxiliary guides, one to either side of the central guide and forming auxiliary guide-slots. each of said guides cooperating with certain of the type-bars, and means on each of said guides for adjusting the distance between the jaws thereof to vary the width of the guide-slot.

In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a bracket fixed to said machine, a central type-guide on the bracket comprising spaced jaws forming a central guide-slot, risers on said bracket, one to either side of and forming the central guide and also forming lower jaws, members adapted to be attached to said risers and forming upper jaws, said upper and lower jaws co-operating to form auxiliary guides, one to either side of the central guide and forming auxiliary guide-slots, means for vertically adjusting said members to vary the distance be tween said upper and lower jaws, and means for locking said members in adjusted position.

In a front-strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a bracket fixed to said machine and comprising a central type-guide and risers, one to either side of said guide and forming lower jaws, each of said risers having two tapped holes. side members adapted to be attached to said risers and forming upper jaws, each member having an upper slot and a cut-out portion in its lower extremity, said upper and lower jaws co-operating to form auxiliary guides, a beveledhead screw co-operating with the cut-out portion of each side member and one of the tapped holes of each riser to adjust the side member vertically, and a screw passing through the slot in each side member and cooperating with the other tapped hole to lock the side member in adjusted position, said slots being elongated to allow for relative movement of the side members and risers to adjust the distance between said upper and lower j HWSM 17. In a front strike typewriting machine, the combination with a system of pivoted type-bars, of a bracket fixed to said machine and comprising a central type-guide and risers, one to either side of said guide and forming lower jaws, each of said risers having two tapped holes, side members adapted to be attached to said risers and forming upper jaws, each member having an upper slot and a cut-out portion in itslower extremity, said upper and lower jaws co-operating to form auxiliary guides, a beveledhead screw co-operating with the cut-out portion of each side member and one of the tapped holes of each riser to adjust the side member vertically, a screw passing through the slot in each side member and co-operating with the other tapped hole to lock the side member in adjusted position, said slots being elongated to allow for relative movement of the side members and risers to adjust the distance between said upper and lower jaws, the central guide having a screw passing between the jaws and having threaded engagement therewith for spreading the jaws apart, one of said jaws having a tapped hole, the other of said jaws having a corresponding clearance hole, and a screw passing through the clearance hole and co-operating with the tapped hole to draw the jaws together, each of said screws being adapted to lock the jaws in position when the other screw is used for adjustment purposes.
