All of these escapement devices which have thus been, in detail, referred to, as well as their operation, are fully set forth in the aforesaid Letters Patent to which reference may be had, if found desirable, to a more full understanding of this description of escapement.
Now, proceeding to describe the improved escapement shift device the same will be seen, by reference to the drawings, to consist of a light strip or bar, J,which is pivotally mounted on the part, G, of the carriage, the same being extended longitudinally in a line which is slightly above the ratchet-bar and an intermediate portion of this bar, J, which is adjacent the inner working extremity of one of the aforesaid pawls, is adapted to be swung thereagainst to force the pawl-devices rearwardly as the latter are readily permitted by the manner of their pivotal support on the part, 0 The said bar, J, is extended longitudinally at one end slightly beyond the corresponding end of the carriage, B, where it is provided with the forwardly and angularly extended arm,f, which, in its forward extension, has enough of elevation above the rearsupport rail, D, to permit its depression without interference by said rail or the lug of the machine frame on which the said rail is supported; on the other hand this arm has a comparatively compact arrangement relative to said support-rail, D, and the end of the carriage, and the carriage rotating knob, 9, so as not to be an inconvenience to, or be unfavorably affected by, said parts in the usual operations or manipulations, respectively thereof.
As will be perceived, especially on reference to Fig. 4, the entire shift device is of a most simple, light, and inexpensive construction, and also, as incidental thereto amply durable. Setting forth the precise construction in detail of this device, as shown, it consists of the light-bar, J, two light, perforated ear-pieces, h, h, having suitable angularlugs, 72 whereby to rivet to the said bar, J,- and the arm, f, which also has the angle-lug, 71 whereby it is also riveted to the bar, J.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, the carriage having the horizontal ratcheted-bar, H, the bracket mounted for a rearward swinging movement, and a pawl-ended arm mounted on the bracket for a vertical swinging movement, and a pawl having a longitudinally reciprocating movement on the said arm, the bar, J, pivoted to the carriage for a rearward and forward swinging movement against and from said pawl device, and the forwardly extended arm, f, for swinging the said bar, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a rear part or appliance for the carriage having the ratcheted bar, H, the bracket mounted for a rearward swinging movement, and a pawl-endedarm mounted on the bracket for a vertical swinging movement, and a pawl having a longitudinally reciprocating movement on the said arm, the bar, J,with the ear pieces, h, h, pivoted to the aforesaid part of the carriage, and the arm, f, with the lug whereby it is riveted to said bar, J, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
