To all whom it may concem:
-Be it known that I, VVILLIAM C. Hna'rnm, a citizen of the United States, residin at Beverly, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to improvements in clamps and more particularly to a clamp of that type comprising a pair of jaws, means for adjusting the jaws with relation to each other, and means for maintaining the jaws in parallelism.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide an improved means for maintaining the jaws parallel and which means will serve effectually to relatively brace the jaws against lateral displacement and will prevent any lost motion in effecting the desired adjustment of the jaws.

The clamp embodying the present invention comprises a pair of jaw members which are indicated in general by the numeral 1.
These members are of counterpart construc;
tion and each comprises a jaw 2 carried at the forward end of a shank 3 and provided with a clamping face 4. The shank 3 of each jaw is preferably substantially rectangular in cross section throughout its length except that each shank is formed with a longitudinally extending channel indicated by the numeral 5, the channels being formed in the opposing faces of the shanks as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings.
As heretofore stated means is pro-vided for adjusting the jaws with relation each to the other, and also means is provided, as will now be described, for maintaining the jaws in parallelism while being adjusted. The latter means comprises two pairs of toggle levers, one lever of the pair being indicated by the numeral 6 and the other by the numeral 7. The members 6 are flat throughout their entire length, but each member 7 is offset, as at 8, near one end so that when the levers 6 and 7 of each pair are disposed in crossed relation as illustratedin Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings, the ends" 9 ofthe lever '7 will oc'cupy the same plane asthe lever 6. The said levers 6 and 7 of the two pairs are disposed in the crossed relation stated, and the two pairs of levers are held in Suitably spaced relation by a spacingsleeve '10 interposed between them at their point of intersection,
a pivot pin 11 being secured through this sleeve and the intersecting parts of the levers 6 and 7 So as to pivotally connect the latter. The levers are so connected and spaced that they may be'interposed between the jaw members 1 with their ends seating within the channels 5 inthe shanks of the jaw members, and pivot pins 12 are engaged through the forward ends of the levers 6 a and 7 of the two pairs and secured in the side walls of the channels 5 at the forward ends of the latter, the levers being thus connected at their forward ends with the jaw members 1. In order tobrace this connection and relieve the pivot pins 12 of strain to a greater or less degree, spacing collars 13 are mounted upon the pivot pins 12 between the pivoted forward ends of the levers 6 and 7, and these collars, which are of cylindrical form, preferably contact the bottom walls of the respective channels 5 in which they are housed, so that any force exerted upon the ends of the levers in the direction of the bottom walls of the channels will be borne principally by the said collars 13, and the pivot pins 12 being, thusrelieved of strain to a certain extent.
The side walls of each channel 5 are formed with parallel longitudinally eXtending slots 14: located at the rear portions of the channels, and pivot pins 15 are engaged through the rear ends of the levers 6 and 7 of the two pairs and project and work at their ends in the respective slots 14, the said ends of the pins being of a diameter substantially equal to the width of the slot so as to positively be guided by the side walls of the slot. Spacing collars 16 are mounted upon the pivot pins 15 between the pivoted ends of the levers and these collars, like the collars 13, are of cylindrical form and are preferably rotatable upon the respective pins 15 so that they may ride at their peripheries against the surface of the bottom wall of the respective channel 5 as the pins 15 move longitudinally in the slots 14' in the adjustment of the jaw members.
Thus the pins 15 are relieved of strain to a great extent and the rear ends of the levers 6 and 7 are more surely guided in the channels 5.
The means provided for relatively ad justing the jaw members comprises a screw 17 provided with right and left hand threads at opposite sides of its-middle and having its end portion. adjustably threaded through openings 18 formed in the rear end of the shank 3 of the jaw members 1, the screw being provided at its intermediate portion with a knurled finger wheel 19 through the medium of which it may be rotatedso as to adjust the jaws.
