Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 18, 1919. Serial No. 305.034.! v v To all whom a't may concern.
Be it known that I, HARRY T. ANDERSO a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Butler, in the county ofButler and State of Pennsylvania, have inventedcertain new'and useful Improvements in the 1 Manufacture of Railway Draft-Gear Yokes (Case B), of which the following is'a full,
. ticularly defined by claims at the conclusion hereof.
In the drawings: Fig. 1 is a side elevation and Fig. 2 an end view of a blank of plate material used in forming a yoke-member. Fig. 3 is a side elevation and Fig. 4 a plan of the blank after it has been trimmed and a slot has been punched therein. Fig. 5 is a side elevation and Fig. '6 a plan of the blank after the front end portion has been upset to form a reinforcement for the keyslot. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal section and Fig. 8 a plan of the blank after a flange has been forged around the top bottom and back. Fig. 9 is a side elevation and Fig.
.10 a section of the blank after an opening has been cut therein to receive the draft gear. Fig. 11 isa'side elevation and Fig.
12. is a plan of the finished yoke. Fig. 18 is asectiontaken on line 13-13 of Fig. 11 and Fig. 14 is a seotlon taken on line 1l-14:-
of Fig. 11. Fig. 15 is a side elevation and Fig. 16 is a horizontal section showinga draft-gear yoke which is adapted for, tandem draft-gear and made in accordance with the invention. Fig. 17 is a'section taken on line 17-17 of Fig.15.
In the practice of the inventiom'a sheet of flat plate steell7 of quadrilateral form, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. constitutes the raw blank. Next, one end of the blank is trimmed so it will be round, as shown at 18 in Fig. 3, and thefront ends are cut obliquely, as at 19, and rounded as at 20. and a slot 21 is also cut through theplate. Next, the front end portion of the blank is upset or forged as at 22 to form a reinforcement for the key-slot 21 which Was previously cut therein so that a die member can be inserted to against the surrounding .in-etal' while it is being upset. At the conclusion T LFFECE.
I HARRY T. .ennnnsomon BUTLER, rnnnsvnvenrn, ASSIGNDR To HARRY vIssERINe Patented May 3o,-192 2.' 1
of this step, the blankwill be in the form I shown in Figs. 5 andofiNext -themarginal portion of the blankjisbent at substantially a right angle 'to for-ma top flange 24, ja

'7 andS.
Next, an opening 28 is, cut in the side or web of the blank leaving .an edge 29 at. the front and an edge 30 at the back This opening is of suitable size and. form to re'-- ceive or form a pocket, for the draft gear of usual fconstruction;.-- At the same time that these openings 28 are formed, the slots 21, as shown in Fig; 14. ,,are elongated so they will be of sufficient size to "receive the key for securing couplerfbutt to the yoke. y
, The; foregoing practice is followed .to make two blanks 33 and 84; which are alike in all respects, except that the outer-face of the marginal flanges'onjone blankare of,
such size that they willfit against the innerface of themarginal; flange of the other blank, so that'the' flanges, when placed 'to' The two blanks are then se- In Figs. 15 to 17,:thereisillustrated a. yoke for tandem draft-gears which is man ufactured according to the method herein before described. formed as heretofore described, but .i -lieu 'gether, as shown in Figs. 11 to 14:, will lap, I i one another.
cured together by rivets 35 which will pass through the flanges of both yoke-members. 0
The yoke blanks are of a single opening" 28,." openings 28 are formed in the side portion of each member, and a central column 40 is left between the openings and in the web or side of the blank.
Sometime before the yoke-members'are riveted togethenthe central portionsof the the central gether.
. The invention exemplifies a simplejmethod i for producing'a yoke which is made upof two forged pieces having lapped flanges ex tending-around the top, bottom and back of the yoke. c
The invention is not to be understood as restricted to the details set forth since these may be modified within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. That'improvement in the manufacture of yokes for railway draft gear which consists in forging top and bottom flanges on a plate metal blank, forging on a second blank similar flanges which are adapted to overlap the flanges on the first blank when the blanks are placed side-by-side, forming a draft-gear pocketin the webs between the front and rear ends, and securing the plates together in spaced relation with the flanges thereof in overlapped relation.
2. That improvement in the manufacture of yokes for railway draft gear which consists in forging top, bottom and back flanges on a plate metal blank, forging on a second blank similar flanges which will overlap and be within the flanges on thefirst blank when the blanks are placed side-by-side, forming a draft-gear pocket in the webs between the front and rear ends and the top and bottom flanges and securing the platestogether in spaced relation with the flanges thereof in I overlapped relation.
3. That improvement in the manufacture of yokes for railway draft-gear which consists in forging marginal flanges on the; top
and bottom of a pair of plate-metal blanks and forming the flanges on one plate so they will overlap and fit within theflanges on the other blank. forming a draft-gear pocket in the intermediate portion of the webs of the blanks, and securing the plates together side-by-side in spaced relation with the flanges thereof in overlapped relation.
1. That improvement in the manufacture of yokes for railway draft-gear which consists in forging marginal flange around thetop, back of each of a pair of plate-metal blanks and forming the flange on one plate so it a substantially continuous bottom and.
will overlap and fit within the flange onthe other blank, forming a draft-gear pocket in forming the flanges to overlap and so as toextend to the one end to form the top and bottom ofa coupler pocket when the blanks are placed side by side forming a draft-gear pocket in the intermediate portions of the webs of the blanks, and securing the plates together side-by-side in spaced relation with the flanges thereof in overlappedrelation.
