DIE3FOR MAKING- STAKEQVPOCKETSIIFOR CARS. T 'v srncrrrcnrrom' forming part of Letters Patent No. 31,l75.'latec1 A ril 17, 1888-. f Application filed January 21, 1888 Serial"1 Io.,261,4 S4. (No model.) I i 1 1'0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it knownthat I, CHARLES T. ScHoEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phila delphia, in the county of Philadelphia and 5- State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Dies for Mak= -ing Stake-Pockets for Cars, of which the fol lowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates tothe manufacture of stake pockets or holdersfor railway=cars from wrought metal, such assheet or plate steel or iron. i
The object of the invention is 'to providemeans for making in a practical and commercially-economical manner the wrought-metal stake-pocket forming the subject of my application of even date herewith, entitled stakepocket for cars. I The invention consists indies for forging or striking up a wrought-metal stake-pocket.
In the'accompanying drawings, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated,'Figure 1 is aplan and Fig. 2 a cross-section of the blank-forming die. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the finishing-die. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the product, and Fig. 5 a cross-section of thesaid product. At the outset Ldesire to say that I prefer to use two sets of dies and heat the blank sepa 3o rately for treatment in each, though it is 7 within my invention to begin and finish the article in one heat and by a single set of dies. A flat sheet or plate of wrought metal (say Bessemer steel) of the proper width and length is taken and the appropriate number of holes punched thereinfor the reception of the straps used tov fastenthe pocket to the car. Then this piece of metal is subjected to the action of dies'which shape it and form thereon the beads or ribs or b of Fig. 4. The dies d are formed with matrices and'projections e f to form these beads or ribs, and also with the pyramidal or tapering matrices and projections 9, h, and 'Z,;and jflc, and Z, to form the body (three sides, m n 0,) of the pocket, and
are also provided with matrices or projections p q to form the fianges r of the pocket. The
matrix'h. and projection hare slightly curved v to correspondingly curve, the face side oz, soas 'to facilitate the subsequent squaring of the sidesmov I f The blankisf given thepreliminaryshape; indicated in Fig. 2, and is then subjected to the dies of Fig.3. In these dies the matrix s is provided with a spring-ejector, t, quite com .5
monly employed to throw out the product after the action thereupon of the dies. Thisfemale diemaybe provided with recesses to receivethe beads and preserve them from destruction ordefacement by the male die u. The dies 3 To give to the pocket its finished shape, as shown in Figs. 4and 5. v I 'Q The dies may beconstructed to form one or more'pairs of beads, a, as the finished pocket requires; The beads b may or may not be required. Themetal between the beads maybe .bowed out to format seatv fora curved instead of an angular clip, thisbeing a known form of suchpockets, and the dies in this particular will be modified'accordingly. 7
Instead of forming the beadsa and bin the dies'they maybe rolledin the manufactureof the sheet or plate, orsubsequentlyan'd before treatment in the dies. T What I claim is- V [1. Dies for making wrought -metal stakepockets for railway-cars, provided with matrices andprojections for'forming the, sides of the pocket, and appropriate parallel beads thereon'for receiving the straps for; securing such vpockets to the car, substantiallylas'described. y y T 2. Dies for making wrought-metal stakepockets for railwaycars, providedwith .mat-, rides and projections for forming the body and 8 5 body-flanges and beads thereon, substantially as described. I I
In testimony whereof "I have hereunto. set my hand this 20th day of January, A. .D. 1888.
o ARnEs T. SGHOEN. Witnesses: I a 1 WM. H. L wIs,v EDWIN A. ScnoEN.
