To @ZZ fw from t may concern i v Be it known that l, Continu Mormon, a citizen of the United States, residing at l/Taco, in the county of McLennan and ttate of Texas, have invented certain new anduseful improvements in Hair Clippers, of whichv the following is a specification The object of the invention isto improve the structure ofthe clipper forming the subject matter of my `co-pending application, Serial No. 469,842, and particularly to sim plify the manufacture as well` as to provide several advantageous features.` i

In carrying out the invention I provide the.; actuating lever with an integral depending; stud which engages in a socket in the bridge, thus giving `the lever a more ample pivotal bearing and reducing thevvearwhich would result from the hole in the lever receiving a fixed post. The coverplate is fastened in position so 'that the tension plate and compression `screw may be removed withoutexposingthe driving posts or soiling the fingers with grease; also the upper cutter blade may be removed at the same time. i
A further improvement is had by conforming the driving surfaces of the teeth of the gear tothe contour of tliespral driv-` ing member, whereby a more positive dri ve` is produced, than where the spiral member merely contacts with the upper or lower edges of the teeth.

Fig. 7 is a detail of the gear teeth. l In the drawings the numeral `10 designates a casing having a reduced shank 11, at its rear end. The forward end ofthe casing is inclined and a cutter blade 12 is suitably fastened thereto. At the forward end of the casing a transverse bridge 13 is provided which has a socket 14- intermediate its ends for receiving a depending pivotal stud 15 of `an operating lever `1c. The stud 15, i's integral with the lever andthe latter is supported on the bridge 13, thus an ample bearing surface is provided and wear at the pivotal point is reduced to a minimum. This arrangement has been found a decided improvement over an operating lever pivoted on fixed post, besides simplifying the manufacture of the device.
The fixed cutter blade 12 is provided with thel usual upstanding rectangular lugs 17 which are received in rectangular slots 18, in the usualreciprocating blade 19. The blade 18 has a central notch 2O in its rear edge which is adapted to receive the arm 21 on the forward endk of the operating lever 16. The lblade 19 is mounted on the blade 12in the usual mannerand is adapted tobereciprocated when the said lever is swung.V
The lever 16 has a central longitudinal slot 23, in its rear end receiving a slid-e block 2a 'which is confined on an eccentric pin 25 carried on the upper side of a gearwheel 26. rThe gear wheel isv supported on a stud 27 mountedin the bottom of the casino` 10. ln the shank 11, li dispose longitudinally o f the device shaft 28, 'which is provided with a circlun-ferential groove if., receiving the end of a set `screw il() whereby said shaft is held against longitudinal displacement. The rear end of the shaft projects into a counter bore 31 and is adapted to be connected with a flexible shaft (not shown), which is driven by an electric motor or any other means. rihe screw 8O also fastens a spring latch 32, which overhangs the counter bore 31 for holdin the flexible shaft therein. Un the inner or forward end of the shaft, l mount a volute gear disk 33 which has on its face a spiral or volute driving member 311. The disk is placed slibstantially tangentially to the gear 2G and the outer end of the spiral member 311- is reduced so as to more 5 is a face view of the volute gear readily enter between the teeth of the gear wheel. It will be seen that the outer end of the spiral member engages with the teeth on a line which substantially registers with the central position of the lever 2l. This point of engagement is substantially in alinement with the pivot points of the lever and the gear 26 and it will be seen that when the block 24e reaches either end of the stroke it will also be alined with said pivot points and the volute gear will be exerting its force on the gear 26 at right angles to this alinement, consequently there will be no tendency on the part of the block and lever to bind and a much smoother operating device will be had. It is pointed out that wear will have little or no effect upon the transmission of motion to the gear wheel 26.
As is best shown in Fig. 6. the teeth of the gear 26 are conformed to the contour of the spiral member 34, whereby the driving surface is amplified and a more positive drive is had than where the said member merely engages the upper or lower edges of the teeth.
The upper side of the casing is reduced to receive a fiat cover plate conforming to the contour thereof, said plate having an upset portion 36 over the gear disk 33. The plate is secured in position by screws 50 which are passed through apertures in the forward end thereof and engaged in the bridge 13. Integral with the top side of the plate 85 is an upright socket 5l which is preferably in alinement with the pivotalV stud l5 of the lever 16, the said socket being internally screw threaded.
I also provide a tension plate 37 which overhangs the sides of the casing at the forward end thereof and has its rear end resting on the cover plate. The tension plate has its front edge 38 contacting' with the blade 19 throughout its length whereby it exerts an even pressure on said. blade and holds it in the desired relation with the blade l2. A suitable aperture or opening is provided in the said tension plate in alinement with the socket 5l, whereby a thumb screw 52 may be passed therethrough and engaged in said socket, as will be best seen in Fig. t. Surrounding the upper portion of the said screw and fixed to the underside of the head 53 thereof is a coiled tension spring 54., adapted to engage the top of the tension plate 37. It will be readily seen that by adjusting the said screw 52, the pressure of the tension plate on the blade 9 may be regulated.
In obviating the pivot post shown in my copending application, it is pointed out that a more lasting bearing is had for the operating lever 16. Among other advantages the improvements set forth herein permit of the removing of the tension plate 37 without disturbing the cover plate 8G or exposing` any of the driving mechanism. As a matter of convenience the easing lo is indented on each side at -l-Q and the rear of the plate 3l', is contracted as well as curved, whereby the device is more easily held in the hand of the operator. The shank is provided with a slot 43, so that the cli pper may be supported when not in use b v hanging it on a suitable projection.

2. In a hair clipping device, a casing. a cutter blade carried at the front of the casing, a reciprocating cutter blade operating on the first named cutter blade, an operating lever having a projecting pivot element carried thereby, said lever engaging al its forward end the recnnocating cutter blade, means for swinging the rear end of the lever for reciprocating said blade, a cover plate mounted on the casing` over the lever, means for fastening the cover plate in position, a tension plate. mounted over the cover plate and having one end hearing thereon, the other end ol` the tension plate. hearing on the reeiliutwating blade, a thumb screw passing through the tension plate. and having screw threading engagement with the cover plate, and a spring tension confined between the head of the thumb screw and the tension plate for placing the latter under tension.

In a hair clipping device, a easing, a bridge extending transversely at the. forward end of the casing and having a bearing socket, an inclined blade secured to the. casing, a reciprocating blade mounted on the first named blade, an operating lever having a depending stud engaging in the socket of the bridge and mounted to swing on said bridge, the forward end of the lever engaging the reciprocating blade, rotating means for imparting a swinging movement to the r Ov.
