LOUIS ALLEN ABRAM'SON, OF NEW YORK, Y.
CLOSURE FOR. IDOORlll-lYS.

Application. filed April 4L, 19531. Serial etiglrl.
To all whom 'it may oon/cern.' i
Be it .known thet l', Lon'e ,ALLEN AnRAM- eoN, :i (citizen of: the` United Stetten, and e resident of the borough of lio-omo county of Bronx, city and State of New York., have iin-- vented certain new mid useful Improve ments in Closuroe for Doorwilye, oifA which the following; le o e'gueeilicoftion.
While inloptohle to other purposes and conditions of use, my improvements relate more particularly to, find :iro designed primarily ',l'oi', closures` for nee in conjunction with doorwiiiye to patiente rooroe or other apartments in hospitals, szinitorin and Similor inetitutione, 'Where eeclueion consistent with iizwility of ingrese und egreso, Vventilation ind Szinlitotion generell y ere (fleeideretm und even .inore especially :For use in surgical institritienel in which it ie frequently desirable to tionei'er u put-lent to :in operating rooln without reino'ifel ,Vroni the bed4 occupied by the Subject, und with the leent 'possible dieturha'uiee or filiiliiculty.

In other words, the upper rear edge of the medial door M, may be formed with a pintle m, for engagement with a Julcrum mortise e, in the under side of the top member e2, of said emergency door E, as shown particularly in Fig. 3; while the lower rear edge of the medial door M, may be fulcrumed, either on the sill member e3, of the emergency door lt, as in Figs. 1 and 5, or on a bracket e4, on the side member e, of said emergency door, as in Figs. 2 and 6, and as hereinbe'fore intimated. In either case the medial door is preferably,'although not necessarily, free -to swing in either direction on the emergency door E,-ex, in Figs. 1, 2, 5 and 6, representing a vertical spring pivot of the automatic closure type of well known construction and use in the art. In this connection it is to be noted that by the use either of the bracket c, or of a sill @3, integral with the emergency door E, as a means of support for the lower por-- tion of my medial door M, I avoid projeetions above the floor that would be obviously objectionable in case ot removal of a bedridden patient through the doorway.
The emergency door E, is hinged, as indicated at f, Fig. t, to one side member f', of the doorway frame F, a plurality of suitable hinges being used for the purpose; or said emergency door E, may be otherwise fulcrum-mounted and supported onone side of the doorway D, by equivalent mechanical expediente if preferrecl, tlie essential teature in this respect being the provision oi means whereby the duplex door E, M, considered in a unitary sense, may be opened up to render the full area oit' the doorway D, available in case of emergency.
As this duplex structure of door E, M, is necessarily heavy, and as the emergency frame or portion E, thereof is normally closed', I provide the otherwise free member c', of the.I door E, with a spring bolt Z), of well known general construction and operation, but which also may be utilized as indicated more particularly in Fig. 11, to relieve the hinges f, of undue or unnecessary strain,
and thereby prevent sagging ete, the bolt Z), being provided with a. latch lever whereby it may be retracted against the resistance of the lift or take up spring b, (Fig. 1l), when it is desired to swing open said emergency door in its entirety. In order to enable the bolt Z), to thus perform the double function of a spring bolt, and oit a. take up or lift to compensate for the aggregate weight of my composite doorway closure, considered as a unitary structure, and to relieve the hinges f, or undue normal strain as stated, I form my bolt '6, with an annular collar 6X, which, when the bolt Z), s lowered, will bear against a floor mortise plate p, as shown in said Fig. ll, and I also interpose said litt spring Zi, between said annular collar bx, and a lixed shoulder o, on the door itsell, as also illustrated in said Fig, l1, oi"- the drawings, which spring- Zi, must be of suiiicient expansive strength and resilience to act as a counter-poise, substantially as and for the. purpose set liorth.
My so called medial door M, mounted as above stated on the emergency door lil, as a supporting frame, is el" course designed -for normal use as a means ot entry to, or departure from, the apartment provided with the maximum or emergency width o'l' doorway D. Should it be desired to close the apartment so, as to afford a patient absolute privacy and freedom 'trom corridor noise or disturbance, my medial door M, is kept shut.
In certain contingencies, however, as where a patient is convalescent, etc., it may be dcsirable to leave the normal medial. door M, open with the emergency door IC, locked in closed position, and ilior this reason I provide my emergency door E, with an auxiliary screen door S, positioned and made preterably oir such height as to afford privacy from external observation as of the interior ot the apartment 'from the corridor while admitting light, air, etc., therefrom. As this auxiliary screen door S, is also an emergency expedient, I support it demountably on the emergency doorl E, preferably by means ot stud posts c, positioned in concealed boxes ct', countersunk in the side member c, oi" the emergency door, as shown more particularl \v in detail in Figs. 7 to l0, oi the drawings, inclusive, which represent a single hinge mount of this character. In this construetion of a demountable hinge support the stud post a, is enclosed in and is integral with a box a', provided with a spring-controlled shutter a2, which automatically closes the box in the absence or' the detachable bracket arm t, on which the spring hinge t, is mounted, said spring hinge t, being of a well known commercial type, and being attached to the f ame a, of the screen as indicated particlarly in Fig. 7.
From the foregoing it will be seen that, by my speciiie construction and arrangement of parts, I attain a maximum doorway closure especially adapted to meet all the varying requirements and exigencies incidental to use in a hospital or similar institution, and by means which are simple and conveniently manipulatable.
It is to be understood that by the term cemergency door7 as herein used I mean to designate a prin'iary major elosure of the full area of the iixod maximum doorway involved; and that by the term medial door I mean to designate a normal closure for a supplementary medial doorway `the opposite direction thereto and provided within the area maj or emergency in disclosed.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
l. .A closure for doorways of the character designated, comprising a major emergency door or maximum .fixed doorway area, said emergency door being formed with a supplementary normal doorway, and a medial door pivotally mounted on said. emergency door and adapted to function as a closure for said supplementary normal doorway, together with an auxiliary screen door demountably supported on said major emergency door, and adapted to partially close said normal doorway, said medial door and screen door hinged to extend entirely across the door opening and to swing in opposite directions, for the purpose described.
2. In a closure for doorways oi' the character designated, the combination oi a maj or of said primary door, substantially as here emergency door oit' maximum iixed doorway area formed with a supplementary normal doorway, a medial door piyotally mounted on said major emergency door, and means on said major emergency door for locking the same in closed position and counterpoising the weight thereof, together with an aux iliary screen door deniountably supported on said major emergency door to swing in adapted to extend entirely across the door opening and to partially close said normal doorway, for the purpose described.
3. A closure for a sill-less doorway of the character designated, comprising a hinged major emergency door oi maximum fixed doorway area, said emergency door being formed with a sill-less normal supplementary doorway and with a foot bracket, and a medial door piyotally mounted on and be tween said foot bracket and the upper member ot said emergency door and adapted to act as a closure tor said sill-less supplementary normal doorway, together with a spring bolt on said emergency door adapted to lock the same in closed position and to counterpoise the weight thereof and of the parts mounted thereon, and a screen door of less height than the medial door and mounted on said major emergency door and adapted to swing independently of said medial door, for the purpose described.
il. A closure for a sillless doorway of the character designated, comprising a major emergency door of maximum fined doorway area, said emergency door being formed with a sill-less supplementary normal doorway and with a foot bracket, a medial door pivot ally mounted on and between said foot bracket and the upper member of said emergency door and adapted to act as a closure :tor said sill-less supplementary normal doorway, an auxiliary screen door demountably supported on said major emergency door, and hinged to swing in the opposite direction independently thereof, and a spring bolt on said major emergency door adapted to loch the same in position and to counterpoise the weight thereof and of the parts mounted thereon, for the purpose described.
