To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, Doo'ron F. OLIVER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Convertible Coupe- Bodies, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a convertible or foldable coupe body for motor driven vehicles and the like.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a convertible or foldable coupe body for motor driven vehicles and the like, which is so constructed that the top and side sections of the coupe may be folded back and down to produce n open car. Another object of the invention is to so arrange the difierent foldable sections that they may be moved or swung from one position to another with the expenditure of little effort and by a simple manipulation of the controlling or locking mechanism. Further objects will hereinafter appear.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which so Figure 1 is a side elevation of the coupe. Fig. 2 is a plan section on line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on line 33, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a section showing the side sashes in the folded position and also the locking mechanism between the foldable top and the wind shield.

More specifically described, the coup consists, as a whole, of a main rigid body section A, a series of folding sashes B, a folding top C, and a stationary front section or wind shield D. The folding top consists of rear posts 2 hinged, as at 3, to the rear end of the car. Pivotally secured, as at :1, to the front or top edges of the posts 2 1s a top section 5, and pivotally secured to the Specification of Letters Patent. springs is directed to resist the downward movement of the tubular arm sections 8 and 9 in the direction of arrow at, or, in other words, to counterbalance the weight of the foldable top, when this is turned back into the dotted line position indicated in Fig. 1.
The sides of the coupe are constructed, as shown in Figs. '1, 2, 3 nd l, and will be as follows: 11 indicates the main door by which entrance is made to the interior of the coup. This door is mounted upon suitable hinges 12. Mounted on said door and secured to same by hinges 13 is a metal frame 14-, interior of which is mounted, on hinges 15, a front sash l6. Secured to the rear side of said fram by hinges 17 is a secondary sash 18. This sash is adapted to be swung about hinges 17 in the direction of arrow 6 and can thus be folded up against the exterior surface of sash 16. The metal frame 14,
upon which the sashes 16 and 18 are mounted, may then be folded inwardly in the direction of arrow 0 (see Figs. 3 and 4) and can thus be folded down inside of the main body A on the interior face of the door, as shown in Fig. 4:.
The metal frame, when in the erected position, is locked to the door by a latch member 19 which is more clearly shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The casing 20 of the latch is secured to the door proper, and the upperend of the latch is provided with a cross arm 21 which is adapted to be inserted through a slot 22 formed in a plate 23 secured to the metal frame. The bolt or latch proper is secured in position by a spring 24 and the latch is turned in opposition to the tension of the spring when the cross arm is to be interlocked with the plate 23. The moment the latch is inserted it is only necessary to release the head 25 of thelatch. The spring Gil a as

The lowermost of these hinges is of ordinary construction, while the upper hinge serves the function of a lock which works in conjunction. with the main section of the folding top. The construction of this hinge will be as follows: One part of the hinge, as 26, is secured to the sash 18, while the upper and lower exterior sectionsQT of the hinge are secured to frame 1%. The bolt 28, extend ing through the hinged sections 26 and 27, is in this instance reciprocally mounted therein, and the movement of same is limited by a pin 29 which extends into a groove 30 formed in the bolt. Tnterposed between the bottom of the hinged section 2-7 and the bolt is a spring 31 which normally tends to hold the bolt in an upper position. The extreme upper end of the bolt extends a considerable distance outside of the hinge and is provided with a head 32 and a groove 33 with which a latch 34: is adapted to engage. This latch, when swung into engagement with the bolt 28, forms a lock between the top section 5 and the metal frame, which not only looks the top to the metal frame but also supports the frame against side play.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the frame 1%, upon which the sashes l6 and 18 are mounted, is locked at two differentpoints, one look being secured by the lower latch 21 and the other by the latch 3. Each individual sash may be opened into the dotted line position shown at 35 and 36, Fig. 2, about its respective hinges to secure ventilation within the coupe, and they be locked in this position by any suitable latches or attachments not here shown.
The door 11, together with the frame lei, may be opened at any time when entrance is desired to the coupe, as the frame will swing about the hinges 17 while the door 11 will swing about the hinges 12. The door may similarly be opened when the sashes are folded down, as shown in Fig. at, as the whole folded structure will then swing about the hinges 12.
Tihen it is desired to open the coupe, it is accomplished in the following manner: Sash 18 is first swung about the hinges 17 until it assumes a position exterior and parallel with the sash 16 where it may be secured by a lock or latch not here shown. Latch 3% is now released. The top section is then slightly lifted in an upward direction and this will release a pair of dowel latches 37, hereinafter to be described. The top section 6 may then be folded rearwardly and inwardly with relation to the section 5. This permits the section 5 to be folded about the posts 2 and the whole top structure to be swung rearwardly, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l. The lower latch 21 will then be released and the two sashes l6 and 18 folded inwardly, as shown in Fig. .4. The coupe portions of the body, or the sides and top, are thus entirely folded away with the exception of the wind shield front D which is stationary. The dowel latches 87 are secured to the top of the wind shield frame, and interposed between said latches and the top section 6 are compression springs The dowel latches are provided as contering points for the foldable top section 6 and also secure said section against side play with relation to the top of the wind. shield and metal frame 1% and connected sashes.
The compression springs 18 act as cushions and permit the top to be drawn down tightly by a suitable form of latch, such as shown at 39 in Fig. 4, thus eliminating rattling of the contacting parts. A similar spring 18 is interposed between bolt 28 and the top section 5. The latch 39 is held in position by a counterweighted arm l0 when the top is up.
Having thus described my invention, what T claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A convertible coupe for motor vehicles and the like, comprising a main body section, a door in said body, a side frame secured to and fold-able on said door a pair of sashes mounted on the side frame and foldable with relation to each other, and a foldable top to cover the coup.
2. The combination with a vehicle body having an entrance opening and a door for closing the entrance opening, of an open frame hinged to the upper edge of the door for swinging thereover, a sash hinged to the front side of the frame for closing the latter, and a second sash hinged to the rear side of the frame.
3. The combination with a vehicle body having a foldable top of the character described and a side door, of a side frame carried by and foldable on said door, and a pair of sashes carried by said frame and foldable with relation to each other.
l. The combination with a vehicle body having a foldable top of the character described and a side door, of a side frame hinged to the door which is adapted to be folded down on the inside of the door, means for locking said frame in a vertical position on top of the door, and a pair of sashes carried by said frame and foldable with relation to each other.
5. The combination with a vehicle body having a fold-able top of the character described and a side door, of a side frame hinged to the door which is adapted to be folded down on the inside of the door, means on the door for locking said frame in a vertical position on top of the door, means for locking said frame with relation to the foldable top, and a pair of sashes hingedly secured to said frame.
6. The combination with a vehicle body having a foldable top of the character de scribed and a side door, of a side frame hinged to the door which is adapted to be folded down on the inside of the door, means on the door for locking said frame in a vertical position on top of the door, means for locking said frame with relation to the foldable top, a sash mounted inside of said frame, and a second sash hingedly secured on one side of said frame.
7. The combination with a vehicle body having an entrance opening and a door for closing the entrance opening, of a frame hinged to the upper edge of the door for swinging thereover, a latch on the door, a latch plate carried by the frame and ex- 24) tending outwardly over the latch, and a sash hinged to the frame and adapted to swing over the latch plate.
8. The combination with a vehicle body having an entrance opening and a door 25 for closing the entrance opening, of an open frame hinged to the upper edge of the door for swinging thereover, a sash hinged to the front side of the frame for closing the latter, a second sash hinged to the rear side of the frame, means to lock the frame over the door, a top for the vehicle, and means to lock the frame to the to The combination with a vehicle body having an entrance opening and a door for closing the entrance opening, of a sasll hingedly connected to the door, and a sec- 0nd1 sash hingedly connected to the first sas 10. The combination with a vehicle body having an entrance opening and a door for closing the entrance opening, of a sash, hingedly connected to the door, a foldable top carried by the body, and a second sash hingedly connected to the first sash.
11. The combination with a vehicle body having an entrance opening and a door for closing the entrance opening, of a sash hingedly connected to the door, a foldable top carried by the body, a second sash hingedly connected to the first sash, and means connecting the unfolded top to the sashes.
