UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, 'ro aivrnnroan Boson: MAGNETO conroaarronyor NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW Yonx.
STARTING MAGNETO.
. Application filed September 27, 1918. Serial No. 255,990.
To all whom it vmi concern Be it known that LlVoLreANG E. SCHWARZ- MANN, a citizenzof the United States, residing at 51. Bellclaire Avenue, Long Meadow, Springfield, in the county of Hampden, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Starting Magnetos; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to starting magnetos, particularly to those-of the hand driven type, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a starting magneto having driving means of simple, rigid and durable construction, compactly and accessibly arranged in amanner nicely associated with the magneto to produce a dust-tight device. I
It is now usual to provide a starting ma gneto with the service magneto of an airplane, to work in conjunction with the distributor of the service magneto to produce ignition sparks at will when the engine is at rest. The
starting magneto should be light so as to subtract as little as possible from the lifting power of the airplane, and, at the same time, it should be strong and durable to withstand the continued vibration and shock to which the airplane is subjected in flight.
In accordance with my invention. the objects are attained in a magneto which, as-
heretofore, is devoid of a distributor but has driving means housed in a gear box carrying a bearing for the rotor or armature of the magneto and containing gearing of a high speed-increasing ratio for drivingthe rotor, as by means of a handle exterior of the gear box. Preferably, the gearing consists of a gear fast on a shaft supported by bearings in two separable members of the gear box, and
a pinion mounted in the gear box on the end of the rotor or armature shaft in engagement with the gear. Also the gear box closes the driving end of the magneto, and the member of the gear box adjacent the magneto has a cup-shaped portion enclosing the slip ring of the magneto, the bearing for the gear shaft carried by that member being closed to the interior of the magneto.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating this preferred embodiment of 'my in-.
Specification of Letters lPatent. Patgnted Apr, '18, 1922,
.hand driven starting magneto of the bipolar type, Fig. 1 is a central vertical section through the magneto and gearing; Fig. 2 is a view of the driving end of the magneto, partly broken away and partly in. section; Fig. '3 is a section on line of Fig; 1. 1
The magneto proper comprises the field magnet 1, the rotatablearmature 2 having primary and secondary ivindings, the -mechanicalinterrupter 3 connected in the circuit of the primary Winding, and the slip ring il connected to the insulated terminal of the secomlary winding. T he arn'ia'ture rotatcs in end bearings, one of whichis shown at 5, and the otherof which is carried the end plate 6 forming a closure for the rear endof the magneto. The collector brush 7 engages theslip ring and conducts the ig nition currents to the wire 8 which'is. conncrted to the starting terminal of the distributor of the service magneto driven by the engine to be started by the operation of the starting magneto, aswill be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
The gear box comprises two separable members 9 and lOhousing the gearing and closing the driving end of the magneto. The
gear 11 is fast with the shaft 12, and the pinion 13 is fast on the end of the armature shaft 14. in engagement with the gear to form a speed-increasing gearing with a ratio of about 4: :1. 15 closed to the interior of the magneto to prevent the entry of lubricant and dust thereinto, and the member 1.0 carries the bearing 16 through and beyond which the shaft 1 2 extends for connection of a suitable driving handle 17. The two membersof the gear box are fastened together, with the gearing therein, by means of the screws 18, and are fastened to the magneto proper by the screws 1.9.
The gear box member 9 has a cup-shaped portion at 20 enclosing and protecting the slip ring, and also it carries the bearing 5 for the armature.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. The combination of a starting magneto having a rotor, a driving gearing for said rotor, means for operating said gearing, and a housing for said gearing, said housing having bearings for said gearing and rotor and The member 9 carries a bearing having an extension around an end of said rotor.
2., The combination oi a starting magneto having a rotor, driving gearing for said rotor, means for operating said gearing, and a housing for said gearing, said housing comprising sermrableseetions having bear ings for said gearing-s and said rotor, one of said sections having an extension around an end of said rotor 3. The combination ot a starting magneto having a rotor, driving gearing for said rotor, means for operating said gearing, and. a housing for said gearing. said housing being separable from said magneto and having bearings for said, gearing and rotor, and having an extension around an end o'l? said rotor.
4. The combination of a starting magneto having a rotor, driving gearing for said rotor, means for operating said gearing, and a housing for said gearing, said housing having l'iearings 'lor said gearing and rotor and having a rupped-shape extension around the end of said rotor.
5. The combination With a starting magneto having an armature with a slip ring; of driving gearing theretor comprising a separable gear box closing the driving end. of the magneto, a gear mounted for rotation in the gear box, means for rotating the gear, and a pinion mounted in the gear box on the end of the armature in engagement to the gear, the gear box member adjacent the magneto having a nun-shaped portion en losing the slip ring, and a bearing supporting one end of the armature.
6. The combination with a starting mag-- neto having an armature with a slip ring; of driving gearing there-For (:UDIPYiSlDQ a separable gear box closing the dririi'ig end of the magneto, a gear in the gear box, a shaft last with the gear and extending.
through and beyond the gear box, a bearing for the shaft carried by one member ol' the gear box and closed to the interior of the magneto, a second bearing l r the shalt carried by the other member of the gear box, a driving handle fast on the eateriorly projecting end oi the shall, and a pinion mounted in the gear box on the end ol'' the armature shai't in engagenu-znt with the geaix the gear box member adjacent the :nagi'ieto having a bearing "tor the arinr-iture shalt and a cup-shaped portion enclosing the slip ring.
7. The combination of a starting magneio having an armature with a slip ring, driving gearing for said armature and ring, and means for o erating said gearing, and a housing for said gearing, said housing ha ing bearings for said gearing and. armature and having an extension around said slip ring.
In testimony whereof I aiii): my signature.
