IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOW-SASH VENTILATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,254, dated July 29, 1873; application filed May 10, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN O. BATES, of Cold Spring, in the county of Putnam and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Sash Ventilator, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a horizontal section of a windowsash to which myimproved ventilator has been applied, taken through the line as m, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same taken through the line y 3 Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre- V spondin g parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved device for ventilating rooms, cars, 860., through the sashes of the windows, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in vuse, and effective in operation. The invention cut away adjacent to the plate B,so as to form an upward opening into the room, which openin g may be surrounded by a casing or box, 0, formed upon or attached to the plate B. When the sash-bar is thin, so that it cannot be cut away to form the upward opening, the box 0 is made with a close bottom, and the said box and plate are attached to the inner side of the sash-bar. D is a metallic plate hinged at its upper edge to the sash-bar or to a light metallic frame attached to said sash-bar and surrounding the opening through it. The ends of the hinged plate D are flanged or bent inward, as shown in Fig. 2, and the said plate is made of such a size as to shut and fit closely into the opening through said sash-bar. To the middle part of the inner side of the hinged plate D is pivoted a long nut, E, into which screws a screw, F, swiveled to the plate B and having a knob or other handle formed upon its end for convenience in operating it. If desired, the screw may be pivoted to the plate D and the nut swiveled to the plate B. G is a fine wire gauze placed in the opening of the ventilator to prevent the dust from entering the room, while allowing the air to pass in freely.
In the case of .a window provided with inside blinds shutting closely against the sash the swix eled screw or nut may be operated by a lever or cam movement, the handle of which projects up through the vertical opening or box of the ventilator, so as not to interfere .with said blinds.
