WIN DOW-VENTILATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 488,920, dated December 27, 1892.
Application filed December 14, 1891. Serial No. 414,946. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID N. 000K, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Ventilators, of which the following,.taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is aspecification.
This invention relates to improvements in window ventilators and it is carried out as follows, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the improved ventilator showing it in a position for use in a window frame; Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section on the line XX shown in Fig. 1; Figs. 3, 4 and 5 represent vertical sections respectively on lines Y-Y, Z-Z, and VV-VV shown in Fig. 1.

In Fig. 1, A represents the sill and A, A, the uprights of a window frame as usual. 13 is the lower movable window sash in the ordinary manner. The improved ventilator is composed of a preferably rectangular frame 0 which is covered on the outside with a perforated wire gauze or netting D that serves for the purpose of preventing dust from entering the room or apartment where the ventilator is located. The frame 0 is covered on the inside with a plate E as shown in the drawings; through the said plate, I make a series of openingsf, g, h, and e' for the admission of the outer air to the room or apartment as may be needed from time to time. The opening f is normally closed by means of a swinging gate F hinged at its lower end to the plate E and provided withside wings F, F, for the purpose of conducting -the fresh air upward into the apartment when the gate F is swung inward as shown in Fig. 3 thus preventing a direct draft. The inward swinging movement of the hinged gate is limited bya stop composed, as here shown, of a flexible strap connection F between the upper end of the gate and the plate E. The opening 9 is normally closed by means of a slide G movable in suitable guides and may be opened more or less as may be desired for the more direct ventilation of the room. The
opening h has on the inside of the plate E, a
tube or nozzle H normally closed by means of a plug or stopper h.
When it is desired to convey the outer fresh air to any desired portion of the room or apartment, I attach to the nozzle H, a flexible hose pipe H as shown in Fig. 2 which may be led to such portion of the room to which the fresh air may be desired to be conveyed.
The opening 2 is covered on the inside of the plate E with a box or conveyer I having an opening at its upper end which is normally closed by means of a movable slide, valve orgate I which may be opened more or less as maybe desired for the admission of fresh air to the room or apartment. The said box I serves to conduct the air upward into the room without causing a direct draft into the latter.
The ventilator when used is placed in the window opening as shown in Fig. 1, the window being raised sufficiently for this purpose and let down so as to rest on the frame O as shown.
By means of this my improved ventilator, fresh air may be admitted either directly into the room or conducted upward without causing a direct draft as maybe desired, or it may be conveyed by means of a hose or tube to any portion of the room or apartment as may be needed thus making it the most effective and convenient device for properly airing or ventilating rooms.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent and claim:
A window ventilator, consisting of the rect-' angular frame 0 covered at its outside with wire gauze or netting D and at its inside provided with a plate E having an air inlet valve and a nozzle I-I provided with a stopper h, and a tube I-I adapted to connect with the nozzle for conducting air to different. portions of an apartment, substantially as described.
