SAFETY FASTENER.
fipecification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Jan. 31, 1922.
Application filed May 1, 1920. Serial No. 378,271.
1 '0 (41 w it om it may concern Be it known that I, BERTRAM N. Wron- WIRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carbondale, in the county of Laclrawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Safety Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention aims to provide novel means for mounting a button on a door, windowor other closure, and to provide novel means for holding the buttonagainst movement.
Within the scope of what is claimed, a mechanic may alter the precise structure depicted. and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings t--Figure 1 shows in elevation, a portion of a jainb and door to which the device hereinafter described has been applied; Figure 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a section on the line of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a view in perspective, showing the support which carries the button.
The numeral 1 marks a jamb and the numeral 2 designates a swinging closure, such as a door or window. The jamb 1 may carry a'stop strip 3 against which the closure 2 abuts. The numeral 4- directs attention to a support comprising an arm 5 and an arm 7 disposed at right angles to each other. The arm 7 has an opening 8 and there is an opening 6 in the arm 5. The arm 5 is provided with spaced chisel-shaped teeth 9 spaced apart and disposed approximately parallel to the arm 7. A pivot element 10 is mounted in the opening 8 of the arm 7, a button 12 being mounted to swing on the pivot element in a plane parallel to the arm 7 one end of the button projecting beyond the arm 5, a screw 15 beingthreaded into the other end of the button, the screw having a knob 14. The arm 5 extends along the edge of the jarnb 1, a securing element 11 being in serted through theopening 6 into the amb,
and the arm 7 extending along the side of the gamb. The construction above described comprises an unusually secure means for mounting the button 12 on the amb for swinging movement. The screw 15'may be advanced. until it bears against the arm 7,
the button 12 being held in overlapped relation with respect to the closure 2.
posed at right angles to each other, the sec- The closure may carry a striking plate including flanges 16 and 18, united to the, closure 2 by securing elements 19 and 20, although, if
0nd arm having a tooth extended in the same direction as the first arm and located approximately parallel thereto; a striking plate comprising a first flange alined with the first arm of the support, and a second flange disposed parallel to the second arm of the support: a button pivoted to the first arm of the support and overlapping the first fian e of the striking plate; a pivot element connecting the button with the first arm of the support; and a screw threaded I into the button and adaptedto bear on the first arm of the support when the button overhangs the first flange of the striking plate.
y In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
BERTRAM NEUER WIGKWIRE.
