WILLIAM ROMLTNDER, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
sAsH-FAsTENEB.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 5, 1914.
Application filed October 20, 1913. Serial No. 796,145.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM RoMt'TNnER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash- Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 'My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification; its object being to provide simple, economical, light, durable and etlicient fasteners for sash of various kinds, especially outside storm and screen swing-sash, said fasteners being fashioned, in some instances, to secure the sash in normal vertical position and at an angle to that position.
Figure l of the drawings represents a front elevation, from the inside of a window, and illustrates the application of one of my improved fasteners to a sash-stop and a keeper device with a sash to hold said sash in normal vertical position, a shank extension of the fastener being designed for connection with the keeper device to hold said sash at an angle to the position aforesaid; Fig. 2, a partly sectional view of what is shown in Fig. 1, the securing of the sash out of normal position being illustrated by dotted lines, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of a curtailed form of the fastener connected to a. sash-stop and in engagement with a keeper device attached to the sash to hold the same tight against the stop.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, at indicates a sash-stop of a window-frame, and 5 a stile of a sash hung in connection with said frame to be normally vertical against the stop, and provision may be had for a swing of said sash at an angle to its normal position. A screw-eye 6 or other suitable device is employed in connection with said sash-stile to serve as a keeper for the fastener herein specified.
The fastener 7 is a right-angle plate having one wing thereof in pivotal connection with the inner lateral face of the sash-stop 4, its other wing being notched or otherwise fashioned to provide for the engagement of said fastener with the keeper-device with which the sash-stile 5 is provided. The pivot is a nail or screw 8 driven through an aperture of the fastener into the adjacent sash-stop, and the keeper-engaging wing of said fastener is suitably bent to faclhtate its engagement with said keeper upon which it acts as a cam to draw the sash-stile 5 tight against said sash-stop. As herein shown, the notch of the keeper engages the screw-eye back of its head against which it draws.
The fastener as shown in Fig. 3, is suitable for porch-screen and other sash, but, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said fastener may be extended in the form of a preferably right-angle shank 7 having one wing thereof provided with a terminal tongue 7 for the engagement of the keeper-device aforesaid when the sash is swung at an angle to its normal position, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, said fastener being then of service to hold said sash in its adjusted position. The tongue is shown offset from the pivot wing of the shank to serve as a handle for manipulating the fastener to effect an engagement of the plate-end thereof with its keeper when the sash is returned to normal position.
Displacement of the sash does not entail removal of the fastener, and the arrangement of said fastener is such that it may be manipulated without interference with window-drapery, this being one of its important advantages.
It is to be noted that the fastener in engagement with the keeper not only draws the sash tight against the front face of the blind-stop 4, but that it also forces it snug against the opposing lateral face of said stop, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4:, whereby the joint of the closed sash and window frame is absolutely weather tight.
I claim:
1. A sash-fastener consisting of a rightangle plate having one wing thereof in permanent pivotal connection with an inner lateral face of a sash-stop of a windowframe, and its other wing provided with a notch with which to have cam engagement with the shank of a keeper attached to the sash.
2. A sash-fastener consisting of a rightangle plate having a shank extension and one wing thereof in permanent pivotal connection with an inner lateral face of a sashstop of a window-frame, its other wing fashioned for cam engagement with a keeper attached to the sash, and its shank provided '1 have-hereunto set my handat Milwaukee in with a terminal tongue engageable .wlth the county of Mllwaukee and State of \V1s smd keeper When sand fastener 13 otherwlse 00115111 111 the presence of two wltnesses.
disengaged therefrom and said sash swung WILLIAM ROMUNDER, out at an angle to its norlnul'vertical posi Wit tion. N. E. OLIPI-IANT,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I M. E. DOWNEY.
