UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
I ALONZO T. GROSS, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN PEN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,478, dated July 1, 1873; application filed February 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALONZO T. Gnoss, of the city and county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Pen-Holder, of which the following is a specification, referring to the accompanying drawing making part of the same, in which- Figure l is a view of my improved penholder extended or opened out ready for use. Fig. 2 is a view of the same closed. Fig. 3 is a. longitudinal section, showing the arrangement of the parts when closed. Fig. 4is a top View of the same closed. Fig. 5 isa view of a watch-key and a tooth-pick which is combined with the pen-holder. Fig. 6 is a view of the inner. case for the said watch-key and tooth-pick.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention consists of a. pocket pen-case with a sliding pen-holder, and with a watchkey and a tooth-pick on opposite ends of a separate piece, which is inserted and held for use in the tubular end of the case, the same constitutin g a new articleof manufacture.
The pen-case which I prefer is the extension-case, shown in Fig. '1, composed of an outside metallic case, A, with an'inner metallic case, I, within which the extension metallic tube G slides to shorten the case to be conveniently carried in the pocket. The penholder P and its pen S slides in thespace between the two cases A and I, by means of the usual slide D on the outside. The inner case I is open at the end F, and is notched at o, and receives the shank f of the tooth-pick T and watch-key when pressed into it, with the watch-key end I: exposed, as shown in Figs.- 1, 2, and 3, and particularly in Fig. 6, a projecting stud-pin, i,'on the shank f entering the notch 22 to prevent the key 70 from turning in, the tube; and the tooth-pick T, being sheathed; in the tube or case I, is protected from injury, and when required for use is withdrawn from the tube I, and the long shank f serves as a handle.
In this way the three articles are combined; in a neat and compact form, which may be carried in the vest pocket for immediate use; and each and all of the articles are the very best of its kind, and are arranged so that neither can interfere with or impair the use of the others.
Having described my invention, I claim- The improved pen-case in which, besides the sliding pen holder, a watch-key and a tooth-pick are combined in a separate piece, f, and held for use in the tubular end of the case, substantially as shown and described.
