IMPROVEMENT IN PENCIL-CASES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 140,477, dated July 1, 1873; application filed February 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALONZO T. (Ross, of the city and county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Im-- proved Pencil-(Jase, of which the following is a specification, referring to the accompanying drawing making part of the same, in which- Figure l is a view of my improved pencilcase. Fig. 2 is a view of the same converted into a watch-key. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal view of the case. Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7 are details of construction, more particularly described hereinafter.

My invention consists of a pencil-case in which a watch-key and the pencil are arranged on opposite ends of a separate piece, either of which is inserted and held in the open end of a tubular sheath or case for use, the same constitutin g a new article of manufacture.
The pencil F and the watch-key D are at opposite ends of the removable piece E, which is of uniform diameter, and slides and fits snugly into the end of the case G, either end foremost, the case forming a sheath for the part not in use. The watch-key is prevented from turning in the case G by means of a notch, t, cut into the friction-collar R, and a stud-pin, e, on the pencil end which shuts into said notch, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Thesaid friction-collar is inserted within the open end of the pencil-case, and serves to embrace, and, by friction with its inner surface, to hold the removable part E in the end of the case when itis placed there. The said collar is a short piece of brass tubing split at a on one side lengthwise, and with a-file-scarf, g, and the notch t cut on the opposite side, as shown in *Figs. 4, 5, 6, and 7. The file-scarf g is made to receive a small quantity of solder, by which the collar is fastened to the inner surface of the pencil-case, on one side, and opposite to the split a, so that the collar will be free to expand and contract when the removable piece is inserted; said collar being a simple and inexpensive means for holding the pencil and watch-key firmly in the end of the pencil-case.
I claim- 1. The improved pencil-case having a watchkey and the pencil arranged on opposite ends of a separate piece, which is inserted and held for use in the open end of the sheath or case, substantially as shown and described.
