Patented June `23, 1931Y UNITED ST'TES 1,811,164.vnr
PATENT voffri-cia CLARENCE C. WILSON, OF IBRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE COM'PRESSED PAPER BOX CORPORATION, OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT DISPLAY BOX i Application filed. June 13,
! a box that is quickly and easily convertible from. the closed shipping or storage formation to open or display formation without the necessity of removing or handling the merchandise therein.
It is a further object of this'invention to provide a box havingan insert adapted to be either nested therein or to cooperate with the cover to exhibit the merchandise Vat a display angle.
It is an additional object to provide a display box wherein the several elements are securely fastened or hinged together, wherein the hinging means shall be of maximum strength compatible with the materials used, and yet may be manufactured and assembled very economically.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Fig. 1 is a front plan view of a box embodying this invention shown in display formation.
F ig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fie'. 1.
tiig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the box in closed shipping or storage formation.
Fig. 4 is a section through the hinge means between the cover and the base or bottom.
Fig. 5 is a section through the hinge means between the insert and the base.
The shipping and display box herein disclosed comprises a base or bottom portion 11 having a complementary cover 12 hinged thereto at one end and a nestable insert merchandise receptacle 13 hinged thereto at its other end. Fastened to the receptacle 13 is a decorative tassel lll which serves to act as part of a background for the merchandise 15, herein shown as part of a salt and pepper set, but which obviously can be any type of merchandise. `In addition and 1929. Serial No. 370,546.
mainly, the tassel 141 servesv as a handle or means to raise the receptacle 13 out of its nested shipping position, asin Fig. 3 to the display position after the' cover 12 has been opened to the position, as in Figs. 1 and 2.
The nested receptacle or. inner section 135 projects beyond the base or bottomll as at 16'so as to cooperate with the cover when in closed position, and is cut away as at 17 to the recessed portion 13 to better display the nierchandise, that it may be visible even when looked at from the side of the box, as shown in Fig. 2. This'insert or inner section takes y the place of the usual neck'provided in the tower section of boxes to telescopev into and hold the cover section.
A foldable easel 19 serves to reta-in the insert 13 in display position in cooperation with 12 and the bottom-1l comprise aflexible stripv 21'pastedor otherwise secured along the insoy ner edge 22 of bottom 11V and along the outer edge 23 of cover 12. On'the. outer edge 24 of bottom 1l another strip 25 is secured and is pasted on the back of strip 21 along edge 23, but extends beyond the end of strip 2l and isalso pasted directly to edge23. These strips may be covered with or be of the same material as the covering vmaterial of the box so that the box has the same exterior finish throughout. It will be noted that a neat and strong hinging means between the cover and bottom is'thus secured.
The other end of bottom 11 has the hinge means for the nested insert 13 secured along its outer edger26. Thishingev means comprises a strip 27 pasted on edge 26 of the bottom and pasted along the bottom edge 28 of the nested receptacle 13. Another strip 29 is pasted to edge 26 onl and beyond strip 27, and is pasted to the upper orprojecting edge 30 of the nested receptacle 13. It will be noted that the hinge means herein described will securely support the receptacle in display position, yet is very economical to manufacture. ln operation, the merchandise 15 rests in a conventional decorative cloth or velvet filler 31 in the nested receptacle 13 which is supported by a suit-able frame 32 of cardboard or other suitable material mounted in back of said cloth, and is closed and packed as shown in Fig. 3. Vxhen the merchant receives the box, he raises the cover 12 and then lifts up the tassel 14, thereby withdrawing the receptacle 13 trom its nested position and rests it in display position in cooperation with the cover in a` general triangular form either by extending the easel 19 or resting the edge of the receptacle on strip 210, depending on which form has been provided.
Having thus set forth and described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A container adapted. for shipping or displaying its contents comprising a base receptacle, a complementary cover hinged at one end thereto, an insert receptacle hinged at one end to the other end of said base receptacle and nesting therein when in shipping formation, the hinged end of the insert being higher than the other walls of the insert and the base-and adapted to cooperate with said cover whenin closed position, and said insert adapted to cooperate with the cover to exhibit its contents when in display formation. Y
2. A container comprising a base receptacle, a complementary cover hinged at one end thereto, an insert receptacle hinged at the upper edge of the other end ot and nestable in said base, said insert hinged to the base interfmediate its rupper and lower edges and projecting beyond said base when nested therein, whereby to cooperate with said cover when in closed position, said insert and cover cooperating to exhibit the merchandise in display position by holding the free end of theA insert raised from the base.
3. A display and shipping box comprising a base receptacle, a cover complementary thereto, means for hinging said cover to one end of said base, an insert receptacle nestable in and projecting above said base receptacle, means for hinging said insert to the other end of said base, said last means comprising a strip secured outside said base and outsidesaid insert on said nesting portion, and a second strip secured outside said rbase on and beyond said other strip and secured outside said insert on said projecting portion.
4:. A display and shipping box comprising ing a base receptacle, a cover complementary thereto, means for hinging said cover to one end of said base, and insert receptacle nestable in and projecting above said base receptacle, means for hinging said insert to the other end of said base, said last means comprising a strip secured outside said base and outside said insert on said nesting portion, a second strip secured outside said base on and beyond said other strip and secured outside said insert on said projecting portion, and means for supporting said insert at an angle to said base and cover for displaying its contained merchandise.
5. A display and shipping box comprising a base receptacle, a cover complementary thereto, means 'ior hinging said cover to one end of said hase, an insert receptacle nestable in and projecting above said base receptacle, means for hinging said insert to the other end of said base, said last means comprising a strip secured outside said baseV and outside said insert on said nesting portion, and a second strip secured outside said base on and beyond said other strip and secured outside said insert on said projecting portion, and means comprising a supporting strip secured inside said cover near its freev end.
6. A shipping box adapted to display its contents, said box comprising a base includand end walls, said cover being hinged at the lower edge of one of its walls to the upper edge of one of the walls or" the base, a nested receptacle portion, said nested portion including side and end walls, and one of the` walls of said nested portion hinged intermediate its upper and lower edges to the upper edge of the wall ot the base opposite the wall to which the cover is hinged.
ln testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
