Description

I. GRIFFING. Barrel-Transporters. No. 140,364, Patentedlulyhl873.
MPHOTO-UTHOGRAPI/IG 0a Mxmmms's Pn cass) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES GRIFFING, OF IPSWICH, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT lN BARREL-TRANSPORTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,364, dated July 1, 1873; application filed June 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES GRIFFING, of Ipswich, of' the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Barrel-Transporter and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawing, of which Figure 1 is a perspective view of it. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 a front elevation, of it. Fig. 4 represents it as applied to a barrel.
It consists of two curved jaws or thin metallic bars, A B, hinged together at one end of each, as shown at a, and provided with handles 0 G, such handles being formed and projected from them in manner as shown. It further consists in a hasp, l), and a latchingstud, E, therefor. The hasp is pivoted or connected to one of the jaws near its free end by a staple, b, and is furnished with a series of slots or holes, 0 c c c 0, made through and arranged in it in manner as shown. The stud E is a hook projecting from the other jaw, near its free end, and is to go through either of the holes 0, so as to hook to the hasp.
To use the apparatus the jaws of it are to be opened apart, and afterward made to closely embrace the barrel below its middle. The hasp should next be hooked upon the stud. One or more persons takin g hold of the handles will be able to readily raise upward the barrel, and move it from place to place as may be desirable.
The article will be found to be of great advantage to packers, stevedores, or various other parties who may have occasion to use and move barrels.
Instead of the hooked latching-stud a staple or stud, with a hole through it, may be substituted, such being to receive a pin or strap. These changes may be construed as mechanical equivalents for the latching-stud.
I claim- The barrel transporters substantially as described, consisting of the curved and hinged jaws A B, the handles 0 0, the connect-ion hasp D, and the latching-stud E, all arranged and combined essentially as specified.
JAMES GRIFFING.
