To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. DowLE, a British subject, residing at Vi alkerville, in the county of Essex, in the Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Pipe-lVrenches, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to wrenches which are used chiefly for grasping and holding on round surfaces, such as a pipe, and the objects of my invention are first, to increase the grip or holding power of the jaws of the wrench; secondly, to allow of a sure and quicker release of the jaws than can be obtained by the use of other wrenches, and thirdly, to grasp several sizes of pipe or other material readily without the adjustment of any of the parts.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a side view of the wrench with the several parts in an operating position. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a section on line 1i of Fig. 1, showing the parts above the handle, and Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 1.

A is the handle which is pivotally connected to the body B of the wrench by the pin 0, and is connected by the pin 00 to the serrated supplementary jaw G, which in turn is pivotally connected to the body of the wrench B by the pin 8. The supplementary jaw is disposed transversely and it extends from the rear end of the body B to the front end thereof and is adapted to rest upon the adjacent face of the body, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The reduced portion of the handle A has formed in it near the end the elongated slot 6 in which the anti-friction roller a is allowed to play, and this reduced part of the handle after passing through the body B and being connected thereto by the pin 0 is extended into the said serrated supplementary jaw C and connected thereto by the pin a: which passes through the said anti-friction roller 0, as is shown plainly in Figs. 2 and 5. The pin 0 passes through short arms or extensions 7) of the body, and these extensions or arms are arranged in overlapping relation.with
respect to the supplementary jaw so that the pivots 0 and 00 are located within the general contour of the supplementary jaw.
0 is a plate spring secured on the interior of the jaw C, with the object of throwing,
the supplementary jaw and the handle back to the position shown in Fig. 1 when not in use. D is the adjustable jaw, the enlarged part being serrated to prevent slipping on the work being operated on. The shank of said jaw is oblong in cross section and is partiallythreaded, the threaded portion which passes through the supplementary jaw C and the body B making the jaw adjustable by the nut [Z which is caged within the said body B, and is threaded to engage with the said thread on said jaw.
When the wrench is being operated, the supplementary jaw and handle. with their attachments are carried in the direction indicated in Fig. 2, showing that the holding angle of the jaws gradually becomes more eflicient, and that any increase of power applied by the handle results in multiplied increase of grasping pressure on the jaws, ow-

Having described and illustrated my invention what I claim and desire to secure by patent is 1. In a wrench, the combination of a body, a jaw having a partially threaded shank integral therewith and passing through and carried by the said body, a nut caged by said body and adapted to engage and adjust said jaw and shank, a supplementary jaw hinged to said body at the rear end thereof and extending to the front end of the same and adapted to fit against the adjacent face of the said body, a slotted handle operable partially within said body and said supplementary jaw and connected to said supplementary jaw by a pivotal joint, and an anti-friction roller revoluble on the pivot of said joint and within said slot, substantially as described. r
2. In a wrench, the combination of a body, a jaw having serrations adapted to hold on round surfaces, and a threaded shank integral therewith passing through and carried by said body, a nut caged by said body and adapted to engage and adjust said jaw and shank, a supplementary jaw adapted to hold on round surfaces and hinged to said body at the rear end thereof and extending to the front end of the same and arranged to fit against the adjacent face of the said body, a handle pivoted to the body and havin r an inclosed oblong slot and operable partially within said supplemental jaw and connected to said supplementary aw by a pivotal joint, and an anti-friction roller revoluble on the pivot said joint and within said slot, substantially as described.
8. In a wrench, the combination of a transverse body provided at opposite sides with outwardly projecting arms, a aw provided with a threaded shank extending through the body and carried by the same, a nut mounted on the body and engaging the threads of the shank, a transversely disposed supplementary jaw hinged at its rear end to the rear end of the body and having an opening receiving the said arms of the body, a handle having an inclosing longitudinal slot and operable within the body and the supplementary jaw and pivoted to said arms, and a pivot mounted on the supplementary jaw and operable within the slot of the handle.

In a wrench, the combination of a body, a j aw adapted to hold on round surfaces and having a partially threaded shank integral therewith passing through and carried by said body, a nut caged by said body and adapted to engage and adjust said jaw and shank, a supplementary aw adapted to hold on round surfaces and hinged to said body, a handle pivoted to the said body and having an inclosed oblong slot and operable partially within said body and said supplementary jaw and connected to said supplementary aw by a pivotal joint, an anti-friction roller revoluble on the pivot pin of said joint and within said slot, and a plate spring at- H tached to the interior of said supplementary jaw adapted to keep said aw open when not in use; substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
