a citizen of the United States, residing` at Tiiiin, in the county Seneca and State of' Ohio, have invented a new and useful Header Yfor Bolt-Machines, of which the a guide groove erchannel -19 in the `4frame following is a specification.
Thisinvention relatesv to an automatic relief device for bolt heading and forging machines, one of its objects being to'serve as a safety for the movable gripping die. Machines of this character suchIA as' heretofore constructed have been provided with a stationaryv pin to rserve as a rigid backing for the toggle pressure and'which would not allow any of the parts to yield should the work become accidentally caught between the dies. An object of the present invention is ,to provide means whereby` pressure is relieved from the gripping dies should the work become caught, and breakage of the parts from this cause is prevented. v With the foregoing and other object-s in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
n the accompanying drawing, which is a plan view of the mechanism constituting the present invention, the preferred rfori of the invention has been shown.
Referring to the drawing by characters "of reference, 1 designates a portion of the frame of the machine in which is provided a guide groove or channel 2 in which a heading slide 3 is mounted to travel, lthis slide being connected by a pitman 4; to the crank 5 of a shaft 6. A heading die is provided at the inner end of the slide, as shown at 7, and located in one end of the groove 2 atv the end of the path of movement of the die 7 is a stationary gripping die 8 and a movable gripping die 9. The movable die is adapted to be actuated by a die slide 10 which works within a transversev groove orl recess 11 and is connected by a toggle '12 to one arm of a bell crank 18. The other arm of the bell crank works on a -pin 14 secured in the frame 1 and provided at its Specification of Lettersateiit. v Die@ i AApplication inea o'tober s, iam.A 'serial Neem/,3247.
freevend with a head 15.y A spring 16 is interposed between lthe head l5 vand theadl jacent arm of the bell crank andserves to hold said arm normally'pressedjtoward the slide 10 and against a stop shoulder 17.
A toggle slide 18-is movably mounted in l slide 18` for engagement by a I'calm 22 onl the In operation the work is placed between the dies 8 and 9 and is headed by the die 7 after being gripped by the dies Sand 9, it being understood that the slides 8 and 18 operate in properly timed relation. Should the work become accidentally caught between the dies 8 and 9and stop the movement of the die 9 before it has come against the die 8, the link 20 would thrust through the toggle 12 Vagainst the bell crank and cause the latter to shift out of its normal position and against the pressure of the spring. 16, thereby relieving the mechanism of the machine and preventing breakage of any of the parts. J v
What is claimed is i f 1. In 'a bolt heading and forging machine a die slide, a bell crank, a stop, a pin slidably engaged by one arm of the bell crank, a spring upon the pin and yieldingly holding said arm against the stop, a toggle conment underthe action ofthe toggle.
2. In a bolt heading and forging machine the combination with fixed and movable dies.l and a die slide, of a bell crank, a stop, a
lspring for holding one end of the bell crank normally pressed against the stop, a toggle connection between the other end of the bell crank and the slide, and means for moving I sition, lsaid toggle and bell crank constituting means for thrusting away from the stop and against the spring when the movable die is hel-d against movement under the action of the toggle.
3. In a bolt heading and forging machine the combination With fixed and movable gripping dies, and a die slide, of a shoulder, a pin projecting therefrom, a bell crank movably engaging the pin, a spring on the pin for holding 'said end normally pressed against the shoulder, a toggle connection between the other end of the bell crank and the die slide, and means for moving the toggle in one direction to press the bell crank against the shoulder and produce an abrupt and positive movement of the movable die away from the fixed die, and for moving the toggle in the opposite direction yto press the bell crank against the spring during the movement of the movable die to gripping position, said spring constituting a yielding abutment for thel bell crank.
4. In a bolt heading and forging machine the combination With fixed and movable dies,
connection between the other end of the bell crank and the slide and means for moving the toggle in one directionto press the bell crank against the stop and positively move the dies apart and, in the opposite direction, for pressing the bell crank against the spring and shifting the movable die to gripping position, said bell crank being shiftable to compress the spring if the toggle is fully eX- tended vand the dies held apart out of normally spaced positions. f
In testimony that I 4claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of tvvo Witnesses.
