  • This invention relates to an attachmen' tor heading machines. It has been the practice heretofore to provide means operated by a cam for ejecting bolts or rivets after being headed, such a construction adding materially to the cost of the machine in that it has required the use of shafts, rollers, rods and other mechanism for transmitting motion from a cam on the main shaft of the machine to the ejector at the other end of said machine.

iittachment for Heading Machines of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachmen' tor heading machines. It has been the practice heretofore to provide means operated by a cam for ejecting bolts or rivets after being headed, such a construction adding materially to the cost of the machine in that it has required the use of shafts, rollers, rods and other mechanism for transmitting motion from a cam on the main shaft of the machine to the ejector at the other end of said machine.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide ejecting mechanism which is of simple construction and is operated directly from the heading slide of the machine whereby an article is ejected immediately after each tiormation of a head thereon.
vi ith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds the invention consists of certain novel details oi? construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claims, it being understood that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts within the scope of the appended claims.

ltelerringto the figures by characters of reference 1 designates the bed of the machine on which is mounted a h ading slide 2, driven by a crank sha lit 3' and provided with a heading die 4t. A. stationary die 5 is located on the bed at one end of the path of movement of the heading die and is adapted to cooperate with a movable gripping die 6 carried by a gripping slide 7 operated in any sired manner. A stationary shear 8 cated to receive stock as it is ted to dies 5 and 6, said shear 8 and the die 6 operating to sever the stock into lengths.
A bracket 9 is extended from the bed 1 and has an upstanding pin 10. On the lower portion of the pin is tulcrumed a bell crank lever 11 while upon the upperportion thereof is fulcrumed' a lever 12 one arm of which is connected by a rod 13 to the slide 2 while the other arm is preferably arcuate and is connected by a toggle let to one arm of the bell crank lever 11. A clamp 15 is pivotally mounted on the other arm of the bell crank lever and grips an ejecting rod l6 which is slidably mounted in the shear 8 and carries aspring 17 one end of which bears against said die while the other end bears against the lever 11. Y It will be apparent that when the heading slide 2 is moved forward toward the article between the gripping dies 6 and 5 it will thrust through rod 13 against the lever 12 and cause said lever to pull on the toggle 14C and lever 11 which in turn withdraws the rod 16 from between said gripping dies. l hen the toggle is thus drawn it comes against the stud 20 so that the intermediate pivot of the. toggle is thrust slightly past the dead center where the relative movement of the links of the toggle is stopped by co operating portions on the links in the form of shoulders or the like. As the heading slide moves away from the gripping dies it pulls through rod 13 upon the lever 12 which thus thrusts through the toggle against the lever 11 and causes the rod 13 to move against the shaped article and eject it. Just as the lever reaches the limit of its movement the middle joint of the toggle comes against the stud 19 which breaks the joint in the toggle and allows the spring to expand and buckle the toggle shown in Figure 8, thereby withdrawing the rod '16 to its set position.
What is claimed is 1. In a heading machine the combination witha heading slide, of a lever connected to and actuated by the heading slide, an ejecting member, a lever connected thereto,

2. In a heading machine the combination with a heaoing slide separate levers, and a rod connecting said (lie with one oi the levers, of an ejecting member connected to the other lever, a connection between the levers, and separate means for straightening and breaking the toggle during succe e strokes of the heading die.
3. In a heading machine the combination With a heading slide and a spring restrained e ecting member, ot'separate leversn a rod I connecting one of the levers to the heading die, a pivotal connection between the other lever and the ejectinginemloer a toggle connection between the levers, and separate means in the path of the intermediate joint of the toggle for successively straightening the toggle and breaking the joint thereof during successive strokes of the heading die.
