CHARLES R. FARGO AND PAUL 0. UNGER, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNORS TO IRVING-PITT MANUFACTURING PORATION OF MISSOURI.
COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, A COR- POSTING DEVICE.
T all whom. it may concern Be it known that we. CHARLES R. FARGO and PAUL O. UNGER, citizens of the United States, residing at Kansas City. in the countv of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Posting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in posting devices.
It relates particularly to a machine posting device with which leaves may be posted in a normal or in an offset position.
The object of our invention is to provide a novel posting device comprising a holder for a loose leaf binder and loose leaves adapted to be used with an ordinary two post temporary binder, with which the leaves which are registered in the posting operation may be securely held in proper register until they are clamped between the two clamping members of the binder, and without the use of accessory holding devices. such as loose pins, straps, etc.
A further object of our invention is to provide a posting device which is simple in construction, cheap to manufacture. durable, not liable to get out of order. and which is convenient to use.
Our invention provides still further novel means for supporting the leaf registering mechanism by which the mechanism may be readily moved to and from the registering position.
Another object of our invention is to provide novel releasable means for holding the sheet registering mechanism both in and out of the registering position.
The novel features of our invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of our invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of our im proved posting device, showing the arrangement of the loose leaves during a posting operation.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, reduced, of the posting device, showing the leaf supportmoved from the registering to the inactive position and the leaves held clamped be tween the clamping members of the binder.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the post- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing device, showing the binder posts partlv inserted through the registered leaves. I
Fig. 4. is a reduced side elevation of the posting device, showing the leaves registered, the registering mechanism in the registering position and the clamping binder member having the two posts supported by the movable leaf support, the binder posts being shown engaged with the other binder member.
F g. 5 is a vertical sectional, view of the posting device, the leaf registering mechanism being shown in solid lines in the registering position and in dotted lines in the inactive position, the binder being removed.
F g. 6 is an end elevation of the posting device.
Fig. 7 is an edge view of one of the swinging members, which carry the support for the leaf registering mechanism.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the off-set registering device.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts in the different views. 7
1 designates one clamping member of an ordinary temporary binder having the usual posts 2 adapted to slidably and lockingly engage the other clamping member 3 of the binder.
i designates loose leaves adapted to be releasably clamped between the members 1 and 3, each leaf adjacent to one edge having two holes 5, and intermediate of said holes having two notches 6, the holes and notches being adapted to receive the posts 2.
The members 1 and 3 have respectively hinged to them in the usual. manner two covers 7 and 8. For supporting and properly positioning the clamping member 3, so that the leaves may be laid thereon in proper regisfor, during the posting operation, there is provided a suitable support which may'consist of a frame having two longitudinal side members 9 connected by transverse bolts 10 and by a transverse guide bar consisting of an angle plate 11, the upstanding flange of which serves as a gage against which is adapted to rest one longitudinal edge of the clamping member 3, when the latter is disposed transversely on the side members 9, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4.
For properly positioning the member 3 its lower end with a with respect to its length, the left side memher 9, looking rearwardly, has attached to it adjacent to the bar 11 an angular stop plate 12, adapted to have rest against it one end of the clamping member 3.
For supporting the loose leaves 1', during a posting operation, and prior to their being registered upon the clamping member 3 and cover 8, there is provided a longitudinally movable leaf support, which may comprise two longitudinal side members 13, which are connected by transverse rods 14.
For supporting the members 13 so that they may swing from the registering position, shown in solid lines in Fig. 5, to the inactive position shown in dotted lines in said figure, and in solid lines in Fig. 2, each member 13 has pivoted to its inner side by means of transverse pins 15 and 16, two vertical swinging members 17 and 18, Fig. 5. The members 17 are pivoted on the rear bolt 10 and the members 18 are respectively pivoted to two transverse pins 19, which extend inwardly from the side members 9 respectively. Q
Each swinging member 17 is provided at forwardly extending arm 20, provided with an inwardly extending flange 21 provided with a slot 22, through which extends arod 23, Fig. 5, having mounted in it atopposite sides respectively of the flange 21 two pins 24: and 25 which hold the rod 23 in the flange 21 but which permits the rod to have a vertical swinging movement in the slot 22. The rod 23 extends through and is slidable in a flange 21 on a rearwardly extending arm 20 of the adjacent member 18, Fig. 5. Two coil springs 26 are respectively mounted on the rods 23, the forward ends bearing against the arms 20 of the adjacent members 18 and the rear ends against the arms 20 of the adjacent members 17.
\Vhen the members 13 are moved between the registering position and the inactive position, the springs 26 are first compressed and then permitted to expand, thereby resisting the swinging movement of the leaf support from either position.
For supporting the loose leaves before their registration, the upper edgesof the members 13 are provided each with a notch 27 of V shape in which is located the rearwardly and downwardly inclined portion 28 of a registering plate which has the shape of an in verted V, the other portion of which designated by 29 is forwardly and downwardly inclined andis adapted to engage the edges of loose leaves which rest upon the clamping member 3. The portion 28 serves to support the lower edges of loose leaves placed on the cover 7, which may be disposed in an inclined position on the rear side of the notch 27 as shown in Fig. 1. I
The end of the portion 29 which is supported cent to the gage plate 11 has a forwardly extending flange 30 adapted to register one set of edges of the loose leaves which are on the member 3, when the leaves are inthe normal registered position. v
For registering the leaves in an off-set position, there is provided a channel shaped guide or registering device 31, each flange of which is provided with a pair of hooks 32 adapted to enter slots 33 in the portion 29. There are a plurality of sets of slots 33, by means of which the device 31 may be adjusted laterally to different positions to suit different punchings in the leaves.
In the operation of our invention, the cover 7 is placed on the members 13, in the inclined position shown in Fig. 1. The leaves 1 are then all placed on the cover 7 with their lower edges resting on the plate 28. The clamping member 3 is then placed in position on the members 9, with its rear edge against the bar 11 and its left end against the gage plate 12. The cover 8 is placed on a plate 3 1 which is mounted on the upper edges of the members 9 forward of the bar 11. v
The leaves are then taken one by one from the leaf support and placed On the member 3 one above the other, those leaves which are to be in the normal position being registered with one set of edges against the plate 29 and the other set of edges against the flange 30. The leaves to beoif-set are disposed on the preceding registered leaves with one set of edges resting against the plate 29 and with the gage 31 located in the left hand notches 6 of the off-set leaves. The device 31 will be in the right hand notches of the normally disposed registered leaves.
After all the leaves have been registered; the holes 5 of the normally disposed leaves will register with the holes in the member 3 which receive the posts 2, and the right hand notches 6 of the off-set leaves will aline with the right hand holes of the leaves which are in the normal position. i
The posts 2 are then inserted through the holes 5 of the leaveswhich are in the normal position and into the member with which the posts will engage in the usual manner. The leaves will then be securely held, the member 1 resting on the top of the plate 29, as shown in Fig. 1. The leaf support may then be swung to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 and in solid lines in Fig. 2. The clamping member 1 may then be forced downwardly to the clamping position shown in Fig. 2 at which time theleaves will be tightly clamped, and the binder may be removed and the members 13 again swung to the registering position shown in Fig. 1, after which the operation may be repeated.
We do not limit our invention to the structure shown and described,as many modifications, within the scope of theappended. claims, may be made without departing from the spirit of our invention.
lVhat we claim is 1.
