Description

Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
INVENTOR:
FRAN K ETT/NG-ER,
UNITED: stag-3s ETTI'NGEB, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
WRENCH ATTACHMENT.
To all whomz't mayzconcm An e1 Sta e of California, have invented anew and useful Wrench Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for adjustably grasping and holding articles like nuts, bolts and screws.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide means for lockin a device in certain desired and indicate positions so that such a wrench may be securely kept for repeated use in the same condition.
Another object is to facilitate a quick and efiicient use of such a wrench at ascertained desired jaw-openings.
Another object is to provide indicating proper relation for assuring certain desired jaw openings.
Other objects will appear from the following description and appended claims as well as from the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a wrench to which my invention is applied.
Fig. 2 Fig. 1.
Adjustable wrenches are made of various types, and the disclosures of this invention may easily be ap lied in various forms to different kinds of wrenches, most suitable, however, is the so-called monkey-wrench, illustrated in the drawing.
e jaw member 3 is normally provided rigidly on the stem 4. The jaw member 5 is normally provided with a sleeve-like portion 6 to slidingly engage with the stem 4. is provided with a nut-like or enlarged portion 8 for handling and operating the screw. 7 The one end face 9 of the portion 8 is made to rest against the lug 10, while the opposite end face 11 limits the movement of the screw in that direction by engaging within the cut-out 12 of the stem The threaded portion of the screw 7 is made to engage with the portion 13 of the jaw member 5. A short smooth end 14 on the opposite end of the screw engages within member 8 must therefore be suitablylarger 1s a cross section on line 2-2 of.

A spring wash erably inserted between the head of the p front end of th for locking the a so squarely engaging with the side of the he opposite turning arrangement tends to securely lock the screw against a turning movement.
he indicating marks 23 on the stem 4 are arranged to serve for setting the wrench in certain desired positions to be so locked by the locking means so as to prevent an undesired adjusting while the wrench is being used. Many times, a wrench is being used close to and on a surface, and the thumb piece is subjected to a friction on the surthe wrench can Having thus described my invention, 1 thumb portion having notches in its peclaim riphery longitudinally to the screw, a lock- 1. In a wrench having a movable jaw, in ing member pivotally provided on the stacombination with the adjusting screw of tionary jaw at a point to be engaged with 5 such a movable jaw, a locking member pivthe notches in the thumb portion of the 20 otally engaged with the wrench to swing in screw, the locln'ng member being disposed on a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the stationary jaw to swing in a-plane paralthe device having means to prevent a turnlel to the longitudinal axis of the device) ing of the said adjusting screw and having In testimony, that I claim the foregoing 10 other means for holding the locking memas my invention 1 have signed my name in 25 ber in desired positions. the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
