BERT CLARK MILLER, OF MILVV'AUKEE, WISCONSIN, ASSIGNOR TO F. W.
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
RICHERT, OF
TOOL FOR ADJUSTING TAPIPETS AND THE LIKE.
Application filed November 8, 1921. Serial No. 513,669.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERT CLARK MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools for Adjusting Tappets and the like; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to a new and improved tool which is especially adapted for use in adjusting tappets and in similar relations where it is necessary to manipulate an adjusting nut and a lock nut simultaneously.
The general object of the invention is to provide a tool having two wrenches which may be conveniently manipulated to adjust two nuts of the character described.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide a tool which is so constructed that it may be manipulated to turn the nuts simultaneously in opposite directions orin the same direction as desired.
With the above objects in view, the invention consists in the structural features shown in the accompanying drawing which represents, in full lines, a plan view of the invention, and in dotted lines, represents the invention in another position.
The tool as illustrated is used in connection with square nuts but it is obvious that it may be used to equal advantage with hexagon nuts.
The invention includes two lever arms, 1 and 2, the longer ends of which may be used as handles. These arms are pivoted together at 3, and extend a short distance beyond their pivot, as shown at 4 and 5. To the shorter ends of the arms, are pivoted a pair of wrenches having the shanks 6 and 7 and the heads 8 and 9.
In the preferred form, the heads are, as shown, slightly out of alinement with the shanks and turned inwardly for greater convenience in manipulation.
In using my invention, it is obvious that the heads 8 and 9 of the tool may be applied to the lock nut and adjusting nut respectively, and a movement of the handles to the position shown in dotted lines will result in moving the nuts in opposite directions thereby unlocking the same. The tool may then be turned bodily to the right or left to adjust the nuts, as desired, and the adjustmg nut may then be held accurately in its adjusted position while the nuts are again locked by drawing the two handles towards each other.
It will be readily understood by mechanics that the tool will be of great advantage 1n adjusting tappets and for other purposes where an accurate adjustment is to be made and where it is necessary to hold the adjusting nut while the lock nut is being tightened.
It will also be understood that while I have shown and described specifically one form in 'which my invention may be embodied, various modifications may be made in the relative size and shape of the various arms without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. A tool comprising a pair of oted together near one end, and a pair of wrenches pivotally connected to the short ends of the respective arms.
2. A tool comprising a pair of arms pivoted together and a pair of wrenches pivotally connected to adjacent ends of the respective arms, each wrench comprising a shank and a nut-receiving head on the free end thereof, said heads being turned inwardly out of alinement with the shanks.
3. A tool comprising a pair of wrenches, a pair of levers, pivots connecting an end of each of said levers to one of said wrenches, said levers being pivoted to each other intermediate of their ends, whereby said wrenches may be operated to rotate nuts in opposite directions or in the same direction.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwakee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wiscousin.
arms piv- BERT CLARK MILLER.
