M. C. ROSENFELD.
PIPE BENDING TOOL. APPLICATION FILED DEC. 16. 1916.

UNITED STATES MORTIMER C. ROSENFELD, 0F CLEVELAND, OHIO.
RIPE-BEN DIN G TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1921.
Application filed December 16, 1916. Serial No. 137,383.
To all to ILOHZ- it may concern Be it known that I, MORTIMER C. Rose FELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Bending Tools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention is a novel construction of a pipe bending tool, the object being to provide an exceedingly simple and highly efficient device by means of which bendable pipes can be quickly and easily bent to the desired curve.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which, while being light and simple, is thoroughly braced or reinforced at those portions subjected to strain, thereby rendering the device less liable to breakage.
With these objects in View, the invention consists in the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the pipe bending tool constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the opposite face of said tool; Fig. 3 is a face view showing a mode of operation; and Figs. 4:, 5 and 6 are modified details of construction.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a cast metal body portion A which is made substantially in the form of a ring open at one side as shown at A in order to receive the pipe to be bent. The length of this castmetal body is preferably slightly greater than. the external diameter of the same and near each-end. upon the exterior thereof are formed the integral ribs or reinforcements B. said reinforcement at one end merging into a shank C, while at the other end the rib or reinforcement merges into a longitudinal rib or fin D which also serves as a reinforcement and in turn merges into the shank C.
The interior face of the body is notched or indented or cut away at oppositely disposed points at the opposite ends as indicated at E. These notches or indentations are V-shaped and are widest and deepest at the outer ends, gradually tapering and fading away toward the central portion as most-clearly shown in Fig. 1. The surface directly opposite the opening or slot A is;
an unbroken curved surface from end to end of the body portion and against which the pipe is intended to rest while being bent, and it will be noted that the shank C is inclined slightly away from the end of the body portion and also away from the open side thereof; this double inclination serving to keep the tool properly positioned upon the pipe during the bending operation.
Ahandle F is fitted upon the shank of the tool and this shank may be threaded as shown at F and the end of the handle threaded and secured thereon. If desired, however, the handle can be made to fit over the reduced end F of the shank, or into the socketed end F and secured by means of a set screw G.
To bend the pipe by means of the tool herein shown and described it is only necessary to insert the pipe in the open side of the tool at the point where it is desired to make the bend, and then, while said pipe is firmly held, the bend can be put therein by causing the tool to grip the pipe whi e said tool is being turned to the proper angle by means of the handle rigidly attached to the shank thereof. The oppositely disposed indentations at each end cause the tool to obtain the proper bite during the bending operation without injury to the pipe. The reinforcements are properly arranged upon the exterior of the tool and prevent any possibility of breaking during the bending op eration. In Fig. 6 I have shown the notch E as rectangular in shape instead of V- shaped.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is :v
As a new article of manufacture, a pipe bending tool comprising a body portion adapted to partially envelop a pipe and provided with reinforcing ribs upon its exterior adjacent each end and a so provided with a shank and a longitudinal reinforcement, said ribs merging into said shank and reinforcement, the interior of said body being indented at the ends at oppositely dis posed points said indentations being angular and widest at the outer ends, and gradually tapering toward the central portion of said interior, and a handle adapted to fit upon said shank.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my Si nature.
MORTIMER C. ROSENFELD.
