Description

No. 739,252. PATBNTED SEPT. 15, 1903. H. R. ASHBY. WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILBDMAY 13. 1903.
N0 MODEL.
' UNITED STATES Patented September 15,1903.
HUGH R. ASHBY, OF MUSTARD, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming m of Letters iatent No. 739,252, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed May 13 1903. Serial No. 156 ,939. (No model.) 4
may be easily and quickly operated, simple.
in construction, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Briefly described, my invention comprises a shank upon which are pivoted two arms, said arms being roughened or having teeth formed in their outer ends. I also provide a ferrule or band, which engages over said arms and locks the same upon theobject or nut which is to be rotated.
My improved wrench 0r bit is applicable to braces or spanner-wrenches'when it is desired to use the same.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and
wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout both views, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of myimproved Wrench or bit,the shank of which is shown inside elevation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of my improved wrench.
To put my invention. into practice, I provide a shank 1, having its upper end tapered, as indicated at 2, the lower end of said shank being enlarged and bifurcated, as indicated at 3, said bifurcated portion forming a seat orrecess for the reception of the arms 4 5, said arms being pivoted, as indicated at 6. These arms carry intermeshing teeth 7 upon their pivoted ends, while upon the lower'ends of said arms are the gripping-jaws 8, said jaws having formed thereon the teeth 9. In-
terposed between said jaws I provide a spring 10, which holds the arms normally in the open position, and to close the said arms or jaws I provide a ferrule or band 11, said band having its interior periphery conforming to such an angle as will'correspond to the ex-' terior sides of the arms or jaws4= 5', and when it is desired to close said arms the ferrule 11 is moved forwardly until the jaws 8 have engaged the object firmly. To provide a uniform movement of the arms 4 5, the intermeshing teeth 7, formed on the pivoted end brace ora spanner-wrench, it will also be noted that I may employ the same as a hand-vise, a suitable handle being-secured to the tapered end 2 of the shank 1. that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention,- what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrench or bit comprising a shank, said shank having its upperend tapered, the lower end of said shank being bifurcated and having pivoted therein arms or jaws, said jaws carrying on their pivoted ends teeth, said teeth intermeshing with each other, a spring interposed between said arms to -normally hold the same in the extended position, and a ferrule or band for closing the said arms or jaws, substantiallyas described.
. In testimony whereof Iaffix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HUGH R. ASHBY.
