To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES HUGH Dom, a' citizen of the United States residing at Che Chase, in the county of M and tate of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clevis Antirattling and Pin Retaining Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to clevises for automobiles and the like, but more particularly to a combined anti-rattlin and clevispin locking device therefor, an the invention has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive and eificient attachment for ready application to a clevis to prevent rattling of the parts and to lock the clevispin in position in such manner that the usual cotter pin or other pin retaining devlce can be dispensed with.
With this object in view, the invention consists of the construction of the clevis attachment as will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

1 indicates a clevis which includes the eyemember 2, yoke-member 3 and clevis pin 4; said pin including a head 5. 6 indicates the anti-rattlin and pin locking attachment, which as s own, is substantially U shaped I and isblanked and formed of suitable thin ontgomery spring sheet metal; the twoarms 7 and 8 of t e attachment 6 converging toward each other as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
Referring to Fi 4, it will be seen that'the arm 7 1s provide with a substantially central o enmg 9 communicating with a narrow bifurcating vertical slot 10 lying above the opening 9, the opening 9 being also in communication with a flaring passage 11 bifurcating the lower portion of the arm 7. The width of the upper portion of the passage 11 is less thanthe diameter of the opening 9, for a purpose which will be presently set forth.
Referring to the arm 8 of the attachment 6, it will be seen that the same contains two parallel cuts 12, forming a central tongue 13 lying out of the plane of the arm 8 in a curved formation, the free end 14 of the curved tongue 13 approaching the arm 8 adequal in width to the diameter of the clevispin ,4.
Having described the attachment, its application to a clevis and its action are as follows The two clevis members 2 and 3 and the pin 4 being in assembled position, the bifurcated arm 7 of the attachment 6 is inserted between one arm of the yoke-member 3 and the'eye-member 2; while the bifurcated arm 8 of the attachment 6 is inserted between the head 5 of the pin 4 and the adjacent face of the yoke-member 3. The two arms 7 and 8 of the attachment 6 converging as before mentioned, said arms are slightly sprung apart when attached to the clevis so as to lie substantially parallel with each other, so that when said arms are inserted into the clevis as just mentioned, it is necessary to apply sufiicient pressure to the attachment to cause the flarin passage 11 of the arm 7 to engage the clevis-pin 4 and to assume the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. As soon as the clevis-pin has passed through the restricted portion of the passagev 11, and enters the central opening 9, the arm 7 snaps back into normal position'to lock the same around the pin 4, as shown in Fig. 5. As the bifurcated arm 8 of the attachment progresses under the head 5 of the pin 4, the curved tongue 13 thereof springs over the top of the head 5 and back intonormal position as shown in Figs. 3 and 5; thus efiecwent 6 havm tively locking the arm 8 of the attachment 6 on the pin 4, while the tongue 13 also retains the pin 4 against longitudinal movement and holds the same in effective operative position.
When the attachment 6 is thus in positlon on the clevis, the arms7 and 8 of the attacha spring tension normally tending to bring said arms toward eac other, a slight pressure is thus maintained on the eye-member 2 transversely of the clevis to hold said eye-member snugly against one arm of the yoke-member 3 to prevent rattling of the Fparts, as'will be seen from an inspection of ig. 3
While in the type of c ev1s shown in the drawing, the usual cotter pin may still be employed, the same is not necessary, although when a cotter pin is in place 1n the clevispin, the same need not be removed, as this attachment is applied to the clev1s without se arating the clevis.
aving thus fully described the preferred embodiment of the invention, what I cla1m as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1. An attachment for clevises including a substantially U shaped member havlng its free ends converging toward each other, one of the arms of the member having a substantially centrally located opening to recelve a clevis-pin, a bifurcating slot in communication with said opening and a flaring passage to receive a clevis-pin, the width of said passage adjacent the said opening be ng less than the diameter of the said opening, the other arm of the U shaped member being bifurcated to receive a clevis pin and including a tongue to pass over the head of a clevis pin to retain the pin against longltudmal movement. p v
2. An attachment for clevises including a substantially U shaped member, one of the arms of which is provided with a substantially centrally located opening to receive a clevis-pin and having a bifurcating slot in communicationwith said opening and a flaring passage to initially receive a clevis-pin, the width of said passage adjacent the said opening being less than the diameter of the said opening, the other arm of the U shaped member being bifurcated to receive a clevis pin and including a tongue to pass over the head of a clevis-pin to retain the pin against longitudinal movement.
3. An attachment for clevises including a substantially U shaped member, one arm thereof having an opening to receive a clevis-pin, the other arm having an opening therein to receive a clevis-pin, and a tongue on the last mentioned arm for engagement with the head of a clevis-pin to retain the pin against longitudinal movement.
4. As an article of manufacture, an attachment for clevises including a substantially U shaped member, one arm of which is bifurcated to form a ring to receive a clevisin, the said arm including means at the bi urcated portion thereof to retain the clevis-pin received therein, the other arm of the attachment bein bifurcated toreceive a clevis-pin and inc uding a pin-retaining spring tongue to engage the head of a clevisin, the said two arms of the attachment aving a spring tension in the direction of each other to hold the clevis members of a clevis snugl together in a direction transversel of t e clevis.
5. s an article of manufacture, an attachment for clevises including a substantially U shaped member, one arm of which is bifurcated to form a spring to receive a clevisin, the said arm including means at the bi rcated portion thereof to retain the clevis pin received therein, the other arm of the attachment being bifurcated to receive a clevis-pin, and including a pin-retaining spring tongue to engage the head of a clevispin to retain the same against longitudinal movement.
6. An attachment for clevises including a spring member having two arms, one am having an opening to receive a clevis-pin and having a part of said arm adapted to engage the eye-member of a clevis to press the same transversely against the yoke-member of a clevis, the other arm of the spring member having an opening to receive a clevis-pin and including means adapted to engage the head of a clevis-pin to retain the pin against longitudinal movement.
7 An attachment for clevises including means for pressing the eye-member of a clevis transversely against the yoke-member of a clevis, and including means for enga ingthe head of a clevis pm to retain the pin against longitudinal movement.
8. An attachment for clevises including means for engagement with the clevis-pin of a clevis and with the eye-member thereof to press said eye-member transversely against the yoke-member of a,clevis, and including means for engagement with the head of a clevis-pin to retain the pin against longitudinal movement.
9. An attachment for clevises including two arms, one of which includes means for locking engagement with the clevis-pin of a clevis and for engagement with the eyemember of a clevis to press same transversely against the yoke-member of a clevis, theother arm including means for engagement with the head of a clevis-pin to retain the pin against longitudinal movement.
10. An attachment for clevises including two arms, one of which includes means 'to receive a clevis pin therethrough, the other'of which includes means for receiving a clevispin therethrough and also including further means for engaglng the head of a clevis-pin for retaining the pin'against longitudinal movement.
11. An attachment for clevises including two arms, one of which includes means to receive a clevis-pin therethrough and for engaging one side of the eye-member of a clevis, the other of said arms including means for engaging the head of a clevispin to retain the pin against longitudinal movement, the'said'two arms having a spring tension in the direction of each other to hold the clevis members snugly together in a direction transversely of the clevis.
12. An attachment for clevises including a substantially U shaped member, both arms of which are bifurcated to straddle a clevispin, each bifurcated arm including means for effecting a locking engagement with a clevis pin to prevent casual movement of the attachment transversely of the clevis-pin.
13. An attachment for clevises including a substantially U shaped member, one of the arms of which includes means for engagement with the head of a clevis-pin to retain the pin against longitudinal movement, the other arm including means for effecting a spring locking engagement with a clevis pin to prevent casual shifting of the member transversely on the clevis-pin.
14. An attachment for clevises including a U shaped member, the arms of which have a spring tension in the direction of each other, one of the arms including means for receiving a olevis-pin and for engagement with one side of the eye-member of a clevis, the other of the arms including means for receiving a clevis-pin and for engagement with one arm of the yoke-member of a clevis, the said two arms being adapted to hold the said members of a clevis snugly against each other in a direction transversely of the cleIvis.
