A frame l() has journaled therein a driving shaft l2 which will be provided with any suitable driving or controlling mechanism, not shown herein, and preferably including a single-revolution clutch. The forward portion of the frame will preferably be recessed at 14 for the reception of work and above this recess there is mounted in fixed position an upper set 16 which may be re tained in the frameby means of a clamping bolt 18 which preferably engages a notch in the set. Slidably mounted within this set is a spindle 20 adapted to be normally urged downwardly as, for example, by means of a spring 22. Yieldable spindles of the sort thus far described are well known in the art and are commonly adapted to thread an annular fastener and frictionally to retain the same in position adjacent to the set. In order, however, for a fastener to be positioned upon the spindle, it is necessary that the spindle and the associated raceway shall at some time be in intersecting relation, but when theraceway is advancing to carry the leading fastener into alinement with the spindle some provision is necessary to prevent inteference between the spindle and the fastener. Accordingly for the purposes of the present invention the upperv end of the spindle is preferably provided with a head 23 which limits the downward movement of the spindle, and this headl has anoverhanging crown 24 for engagement with one arm of a pivoted latch 26 which is normally held toward the line of the spindle byA means of a spring 28. Fasteners are supplied to the upper set 16 from a curved raceway 30 pivotallyV mounted at 32 upon the frame and carrying at its upper end a hopper 34 of any suitable form. Preferably, these parts will be so designed that their center of gravity is approximately at the pivot point in o rder to reduce their inertia and lessen the vibration of the machine. The lower end of this raceway will be provided with the usual retaining spring and the raceway is so designed that the lowormost fastener therein may be brought into alinement with the set 16 and the spindle 20 by the pivotal movement of the raceway. ln order to prevent interference between the raceway and the spindle 20, the spindle is retained in retracted position by means of the latch 26 until the lower end of the raceway has moved into alinement with the spindle 20. rEhe spindle is then released for downward movement by engagement of the latch 26 with a roller 36 upon the raceway 30. The relative position of the parts just before the spindle is released is shown in Fig. 6. lt is intended that the upper raceway in the particular embodiment ofthe invention herein illustrated shall be used for gromets and it will be noted that the design of the raceway is such that these gromets are delivered from the hopper with their barrels up and are` reversed dur ing movement of the-'raceway so that they may be applied flange up to the upper surface of the work. Beciprocation of the lower set is effected by means of a lever 6() pivoted upon the main shaft 12 and connected by means of a slotted end to a cross pin 62 in a slot of the slide 44.
Actuation of this lever is eected by power conveyed from the main shaft 12 through an eccentric 64 and a linlr 66 to a lever 68 which is pivoted at upon the frame ofthe machine. to the lever 60 by means of a toggle link 72 thus forming a very powerful and effectual arrangement for transforming the rotary motion of the shaft 12 into the reciprocating motion of the slide 44.
Fasteners, in this case annular washers, are supplied to` the lower set 40 from a raceway i' 4 which is practically straight throughout its entire length and is supplied with washers by a hopper 76 of usual form carried at its upper end. The upper end of the raceway 74 is supported by means of a sliding 'l`slot connection to a member 78 which is pivotally mounted upon a rearward extension of the lever 68. The forward end of the raceway is pivotally supported upon a link or lever 80 pivotally attached at 82 to the frame of the machine. Actuation of this raceway to deliver washers to the lower set is effected by means of a pin 84 carried by the lever 60 soV as to coact with a cam slot 86 in the lever 80. It will be noted that the construction and arrangement of the parts for supporting and actuating the race way 7 4 is such that when the forward end of the raceway is moved into alinement with the lower set to deliver a washer thereto, the rear end of the raceway is depressed so that the raceway assumes a more nearly horizontal position and the fastener is delivered to the lower set at a relatively high level. lVhen the raceway is retracted so that it is out of delivering position, the rear end of the raceway is elevated, thereby facilitating the flow of washers along the raceway and depressing the delivery end yof the latter so as to clear the work. A feature of utilizing the lever 68 to support the rear part of the raceway is that it synchronizes the up and down movements ofthe delivery end with those ol the lower tool 40 and insures that the delivery end and the tool will move in opposite directions relatively to each other. The upper or gromet raceway 30 is actuated in suitable timed relation to the other parts of the machine by means of a lever 8S pivotally mounted at 90 upon the frame of the machine and pivotally connected at its upper end to said raeeway. The actuation of this lever is effected in a similar manner to that of the lever 80 by means of a pin and cam slot connection with the lever 60. f y

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
l. A fastener-setting machine comprising 1 a stationary setting tool and a movable spindle extending therethrough, a raceway the delivery end of which is movable to and from registration with said spindle to supply fasteners successively thereto, and
means controlled by movement of said raceway to cause said spindle to function.
2. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a setting die, a spindle slidably mounted within saiddie, a raceway for annular fasteners mounted for movement to bring the endmost fastener in the raceway into and out of alinement with said spindle, and means responsive to the move-V ments of the raceway for controlling said spindle. i
3. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a setting die, a spindle slidably mounted within" said die, means urging said spindle to its outermost position, a raceway for supplying fasteners to said spindle and rdi\adapted to be brought into and out of alinement therewith, means for retaining said spindle in retracted position, and means responsive to the movements of said raceway for controlling the operation of said retaining means.
4. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a setting die provided with a yieldable spindle, a raceway for supplying annular fasteners to said spindle movable into and out of alinement with the die and spindle and across the extended position of the spindle, a latch for retaining said spindle in retracted position, and means responsive to the movement of said raceway for releasing` said latch to allow said spindle to pass through the endmost fastener in the raceway.
5. A machine of the class described having, in combination, cooperating sets, one of said sets being provided with a slidable spindle constructed and arranged to be normally in extended position, means comprising one of said sets for moving said spindle to Aretracted position, means for retaining said spindle in retracted position, a raceway for supplying` fasteners to said spindle movable into and out of alinement therewith, and means responsive to the movement of said raceway for releasing `said retaining means to allowsaid spindle to pass into extended position and engagement with a fastener in said raceway.
6. A machine of the class described having, in combination, cooperating setting dies, a spindle associated with one of said dies and relatively movable with respect to the die, said spindle and die being constructed and arranged so that the spindle is normaily in extended position, raceways for supplying fasteners to the respective dies, there being provision for relative movement of a raceway, and the spindle to bring the endmost fastener in the raceway in alinement with the spindle, and means responsive to the relative movement of the spindle and raceway for controlling the relative movement of the spindle and die. v
7. A machine of the class described having, in combination, cooperating setting dies, a slidable spindle associated withone of said dies and constructed and arranged to be normallyin extended position, raceways for supplying fasteners to the respective dies, andmea-ns responsive to the movement of one of said raceways for controlling said slidable spindle.
S. A fastener-setting machine comprising a setting tool, an inclined raceway for supplying fasteners to said tool, and racewayoperating mechanism including two movable members arranged to support the raceway at diiferent points along its length, oney of which members is arranged to move the adjacent portion of the raceway transversely to the lengthv of the raceway and the other of which is arranged to move the raceway lengthwise to and from fastener-delivering position relatively to said tool.
9. A machine of the class described having, in combination, a raceway, pivoted linlrs for supporting' said raceway, one of which is pivotally connected thereto and the other oi'iwhich is slidably connected to the racevay, and means for oscillating the raceway constructed and arranged to cause said links to be oppositely rotated dii-.rino` any one prolorcssive movement of the raceway.`

A. machine of the class described co1nprising cooperative setting` members of which one is movable, a movable raceway for supplying; fasteners to one of said setting members, a movable raceway-support, means arranged to reciprocate said support, and means operaole by said support to op erate themovable setting member so as to take 'fastener from the raceway` A machine of the class described having, in combination, a frame, a driving shaft jonrnaled therein, a bell cranlr lever pivoted upon the frame, connections between said shaft and the lever for oscillating the same, cooperating` dies, one of which is movable, a lever for merino` said set journaled upon said shaft, and a toggle link connection between said bell crank lever and said set operatino` lever. y

A machine of the class described comprising` cooperative setting;` members one of which is movable, a movable raceway for supplying` fasteners to one of said setting members, mechanism for operating` the movable setting member, said mechanism includinp,` a recinrocatory member arranged to support the raceway and to move the latter, and means arranbed to impart other movement to the raceway.

A fastener-inserting` machine comprisino,` two cooperative settingtools, mecha-` nism for reciprocating' one of said tools to ward and from trio other, a raceway for suppryingv fasteners to said movable tool, mechanism arranged to move the raceway to and from fastener-delivering position relatively to said movable tool, and means arranged to move the delivery end of the raceway in svnchronism with but in the opposite direction relatively to the reciprocatory movements of said movable tool. A machine of the class described comprising anfoperating shaft, an operating member carried by the shaft, cooperative setting,- tools, a raceway for supplying fasteners to one offsaid tools, and mechanism operable by said operating` member and including two relativelyV mo 'able members connected to and supportingJ separate portions of the raceway, each of said two members being, arranged to reciprocate the raceway otherwise than alongr the lines of reciprocation pertaining to the other.

A machine of the class described comprising setting mechanism including an upper setting tool and a lower setting tool, a raceWay for supplyingfasteners to the upper tool, the delivery end of the racevvay being movable to and lfrom registration With the upper tool7 a spring-projected spindle arranged in the upper tool so as to be pushed back by the lower tool, and means arranged to restrain the spindle when the latter is pushed back, said means being controlled by the raceivay so as to release the spindle When the end of the racevvay is in registration With the upper tool, the spindle being thereupon movable under the influence of its projecting spring to thread the fastener at the end of the racevvay.

A machine of the class described comprising an upper setting tool7 a lower setting tool, mechanism for operating the lovver tool, a movable racevvay arranged to supply fasteners to the upper tool, a slidable spindle associated With the upper tool to cooperate with the raceway, and means operable by said mechanism -to operate the racevvay and to control the movements of said spindle.
