TANK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 2, 1921.
Application filed May 28, 1920. Serial No. 384,920.
To all -w/Lom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns E. Fm'ronorr, a citizen ot the United `States, and resident oi Asbury Park, in the county of Monmouth and vState ot New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Tank, of which the following' is a iull, clear, and exact description.
T his invention relates to tanks, and aims to more particularly provide a new and improved tank ot the portable type, which is adapted to receive a lluid :for various purposes, and to at some times occupy a tilting position.
In connection ivith bloiv -torches, more particularly of the portable type, it is realized that it is often desirable to have the nozzle assume an inclined or tilted position so that the llame projected therefrom may be brought to bear against the surface above or below the horizontal plane normally occupied by the nozzle.
retofore, mechanics engaged in this line of ork have accomplished this result by' )lacing pieces ot vfood, stone, etc.,under the Iear edge or" the burner tank so that the nozan inclined position, by means r' which the flame projected therefrom may brought to bear upon the desired point. rlhis has, at best, been an unsatisfactory eX- pedient in View oi"` the tact that the slightest jar was liable to upset the torch, resulting in great damage, and often in the explosion i the burner.
l further defect which has been experiin all 'types o portable tanks or res- 1rs, and more particularly those associated with a burner, has been that upon the tank assuming' an inclined position for the purpose above brought out, that the centrally extending pipe Withn the tank has not been submerged Within the fluid contained therein, When the greater part of the same has been consumed.
lfvlith this in vieiv, I have constructed a tank adaptable to a number of different purposes, but which is primarily intended for use in 'connection with a blow-torch or burner by means of which the fuel will at all times be fed to the burner as long as any appreciable amount of the same remains in the tank, a further object of my invention being the provision of certain means associated with the tank which Will permit of the burner nozzle assuming an inclined position without any danger of an overturning .oi the tank resulting.
Reference is had to the attached sheet of drawings as illustrating one practical embodiment oi my invention, and in which drawings,
Figure 1 is a partly sectional side View of a tank constructed in accordance With my invention showing the same in its normal position.
Fig. 2 is a similar view but showing,r the position of the parts when the tank and burner nozzle is inclined, and
Fig. 3 is a front view of a certain detail ot construction aliording a support and retaining means for the tank and nozzle, when the latter are in tilted position.
In these views the reference numeral 5 indicates a tank or reservoir of any desired type orn construction which may conveniently be supplied with a conventional fuel inlet pipe 6, pressure gage 7 and air pressure inlet and check valve 8.
The torch or burner is also conveniently' furnished with a fuel pipe 9, regulator valve 10 and burner nozzle 11, all of any desired construction.
Now with a view of providing means Which will permit of a supporting and retention ot' the tank and nozzle in an inclined position, I conveniently apply any suitable type of bracket 12 to the fuel pipe 9 preferably at a point beyond the valve 10. A stirrup iron or other suitable support 13, has its upper ends pivotally secured, as at 111, to the bracket 12, suitable securing' means for retaining this supporting member at any desired angle with respect to the bracket being afforded, such as a bolt and Wing nut forming the pivot 14 and passing through the bracket 12 and upper ends of the stirrup iron 13.
It will be appreciated by this construction, that, as has been illustrated in Fig. 2, the stirrup iron 13 or other supporting member may be adjusted to any convenient angle with respect to the bracket 12, and secured in this position by means of the bolt and Wing nut 15 so that the torch may be leit unattended, to play its flame upon any desired spot.
In this connection, it is to be noted that certain types of burner nozzles are extremely heavy and extend to a position Well beyond the side of the tank or reservoir 5, so that danger of. the entire apparatus upsetting Now with a view of providing means Y which will serve to permit Vthe Huid within Ythe tank to be withdrawn into the nozzle irrespectiveof the level of the former, or degree oftilt of the tank, Irpi'ovide, contrary to the rigid centrally extending pipe which usually Vforms an extension oi" the inner end of tho pipe 9, a flexible piece of tubing 16 or' any desired construction, the upper end of which is secured tothe inner end or" the pipe 9, the-lower end having,` conveniently associated with it a weight 17 'serving at all times to cause the tubing 1G to lie in a substantially vertical plane, at which point the lower end of the same will always be submerged below the level oiv the fluid within the tank 5. Y
It will readily be appreciated that this latter part of my invention is applicable to any type of tank capable of receiving fluid,
and which tank is adapted to be tilted at times.
Obviously numerous modifications of structure might be resorted to without in the least departing from the scope of my claims, which read:
Having thus described my invention what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows l. A tank, a burner nozzle, a fuel pipe Y extending between` Vsaid tank IandY burner nozzle, said tank resting normallyA upon its base and serving to support said nozzle, and means attached to said fuel pipe for supporting saidA tank in van inclined` position. Y
'2. Atank, a burnernozzle, afuel pipe extending between said-tank andV burner nozzle, said tank resting normally upon its base and serving to supportsaid nozzle, a bracket secured to said iuel pipe, a stiirup iron pivotally secured to said bracket, and means for retaining said stirrup iron Aatany desired angle with respect'to said bracket.
3. A tank, a burner nozzle, a fuel pipe extending between said tank Vand burner nozzle, said tank resting normally upon its base and serving tosupport said nozzle, Yand a bracket attached to said uelpipe, a stirrup iron pivotally secured to said bracket,Y and a wing nut adapted Yto co-act with said bracket and stirrup iron'iior retaining the same in fixed position.
