IMPROVEMENT IN SPR-ING BED-BOTTOMS.

My invention has for its object to improve y the construction of the spring bed-bottom for which Letters Patent No. 103,425 were issued to Daniel C. Brownsen, May 24, 1870, so as t-o make it more satisfactory and reliable in use. The invention consists in the combination of the long longitudinal bars, the end cross-bars, the short longitudinal bars, and the beveled cross-bars with the springs of the bed-bottom, as hereinafter fully described.

A are the upper or arched springs, to the under side of the end parts of which are attached the' sockets B to receive the ends of the lower shorter springs G. The middle parts of the side sprin gs C are secured to the bars D, which are made longer than the springs A so that the ends of the said bars D may rest upon cleats attached to the end rails of a bedstead.V The bars D near their ends, and beneath the ends of the spring A, are connected by cross bars E, which not only hold the side springs in their proper relative positions, but also receive and support the ends of the said springs A, should they be subjected to a heavy weight. The middle parts of the intermediate lower springs C are secured to longitudinal bars F, which are made shorter than the bars D so that their ends will not reach to the cross-bars E. G are cross bars, the inner sides of which are beveled oft', and which are inserted between the lower spring 4G and the end parts of the bars D and F, and

are secured to said bars D and F. The crossbars Gr connect the intermediate sections of Athe bed-bottom with the side sections, and

hold them in their proper relative position, and at the same time strengthen the springs C. The crossbars G are secured to the bars D and F so as to be held firmly in place. H are coiled-wire springs secured to the springs (l at or near their points of attachment to the bars D F, and upon the upper ends of which rest the springs A, pieces of cloth l being interposed between the springs H A to deaden the sound when said springs come in contact.

Having thus described my invention, ll claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent` The combination of the long longitudinal bars D, the cross-bars E, the short longitudinal bars F, and the beveled cross-bars G with the springs A C H, substantially as herein shown and described.
