PATENT OFFICE.
l CHARLES W. PURCELL AND SAMUEL PURCELL, OF LUNDYS LA NE, PA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-Borrow.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent o. 170,1 1 l dated November 16, 1875; application filed August 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHAs. W. PURcELL and SAML. PUECELL, of Lundys Lane, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Bottoms; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference -being had 'to the accompanying drawings, and toA the Aletters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciiication.
`The nature of our invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a spring bedbottom, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
, In the annexed' drawings, Figure lis a plan view, V'and Fig. 2 is an end elevation, of a device embodying our invention.
4A A represent the ordinary bed-slats supported upon spiral springs B B, resting upon bars C C. The bars C C may either form part ofaframe, which is placed in the bedstead, or they may rest simply on the ordinary cleats usually attached to the side pieces of the bedstead. O11 the upper sides of the bars C are placed and fastened cords, bands, or their equivalents, as shown at a, and the lower larger ends of the springs B are placed thereon, and fastened to the bars by staples b b. The cords c keep the springs from immediate contact with the bars, thus preventing any noise, and the cords a at each side extend upward, and are connected to the loops D, which prevent the two outer bars A from moving sidewise, as the loops D are connected rigidly together, as hereinafter described. The upper end of each spring B is extended and forms a loop, D, through which the slat passes, the slat being fastened by a staple, d, passing over one of the loops through which the slat passes. The loops D D of each series of springs are connected by wire rings or links E, as shown. These links E form a rigid connection between the loops D, whereby all lateral or side motion is prevented, as lthe cords a, attached to the outside loops D, hold them in place, and the attachment between the inside loops D being rigid no lateral motion can be effected. I. Y
' By this construction we obtain a perfectlyequalizing bed bottom, so that it' persons of different Weight are resting thereon the bed-bottom will sink down as far under the lighter as under the heavier person. It is simple in construction, easily and quickly put together, strong, and durable, and not liable to get out of order. It can be manufactured at a low price, so as to bring it within reach of almost everybody.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new by Letters Patent, is-
l. The spiral springs B, having the loops D formed on the top, and forming a part thereof, in combination with the slats A and links E,
said links E connecting the loops D, and rigidly preventing lateral displacement, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The springs B, having loops D, slats A, links E, and the cord a, connect-ing the frame C andr end loops D, in combination Awith the staples b, all constructed and arranged as and for the purpose put forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we ax our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. PURCELL. SAMUEL PURGELL.
