WILLIAM OGONNOR, OF .BERVILLE, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION-LADDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,948, dated April 15, 1873 application filed September 19, 1872.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM OGoNNoR, of
' ure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a ladder, so arranged that the extension of the same may be above the plat form, or horizontallyin any direction, so that the position of the ladder need not be changed. The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of the various parts, as more fully hereinafter set forth and described.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents two ladders of equal length, connected at top by engagement with the upper round I). A brace, B, prevents these ladders from being displaced when in use. At their bottom ends the side pieces of these ladders are provided with adjustable feet (J, held in any desired position by means of the teeth, loops, and cams or wedges, as shown, for the purpose of adapting the ladder to inequalities of. the surface upon which it stands. D is a platform, pivoted to the upper round I) of the ladders, and whose outer end rests upon braces b, which,
in turn, rest upon one of the lower rounds of one of the ladders, the lower ends of said braces being properly notched to hold them in place. 6 e are loops, to receive a loose round or bolt, d, for the purposes hereinafter described. F is another section of ladder, the lower end of which, by any suitable means, is secured or pivoted, as shown in Fig. 1, to the upper round a, and secured in its upright position by the braces G, the lower ends thereof engaging with the platform, as shown, or with one of the rounds of the ladders A; or, as shown in Fig. 2, the lower ends of the section F may engage with the round or bolt 61 of the platform, and extend outward on the same plane of the platform, the braces G- resting upon the ground to sustain it. It is so arranged that this section may be extended in any directiona great desideratum in fruitpicking.
That I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with two ladders, A, the extension F, arranged as described, in order that it may be extended in any desired direction, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
2. The arrangement of the ladders A F, braces B G, adjustable feet (J, and platform D, (the latter being provided with loops E and bolt d,) substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth.
