Be itknown that I, Tnnooon SorioU, a subject of the King of llorway and a resident of hlanslield, county of Richland, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Innorovements in Brush-Ho]ders of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brush holder supports and especially to compound brush holders associated therewith of the tandem type adapted to provide a large area of positive brush Contact distributed over a considerable segment on the collector rings, as required for instance in valternators and rotary converters especially where relatively heavy currents are to be provided for.
The main objects of this invention are to provide an improved and simplified form of such brush holders and supporting means therefor; to provide improved means for mounting the same; to provide an improved form of connections for taking current to or from said brush holders, and the brushes carried thereby; to provide more effectively against short circuits in the brush holder connections and against accidental breaks therein; and to provide a rigid housing for the conductors adapted to serve also as a support for the brush holders.
An illustrative embodiment of this invention is shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a plan. showing parts of two collector rings d sposed sideby side and a pair of brush holders associated therewith and supported on arms stationarily mounted,
it is to be understood, on the frame of ma chine which as a whole is not shown.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the forward brush holder and a segment of the corresponding collector ring.
Fig. 3 is an irregular section taken on the line 3-8 of Fig. 1 extending through both a front and rear brush holder.
In the construction shown in the drawings, the brush holder fram s 1 are each provided with a plurality of brushes 2. The brush boxes are provided with covers 3 which have threaded connection with the frame. Compression springs at are disposed between said covers and the outer ends of the brushes to insure positive contact of the brushes with the corresponding ring. Each brush is provided with a current lead or pigtail 5 leading through a perforation in the cover. The
outer end of the pi 'tail is connected to the frame 1 by a contact member, as for instance a screw 6 and terminal lug 6.
Tubular studs '7 are provided to support I frame of the machine, not shown. v Tubular insulating sleeves 8 provided on each of said studs to prevent short circuiting of the brush holders, or grounding thereof on the frame of the machine. et screws or bolts 9 are used for clamping the split sleeves at each end of the frame to the brush holder studs 7. The inner ends of said studs are carried by radially disposed arms 10.
Detachable fastenings such for instance as screws are provided on the brush holders, as shown at 11, for connecting the'current supply leads or cables 12 which lead to the source of current. .he cable for the front brush holder enters the corresponding stud 7 at its forward or outer end whereas the cable for the roar brush holder enters the other stud through a side aperture 13, shown in Fig. 3. v
The collector rings 1% are insulated from the hub 15 whereon they are mounted .by a layer of insulation in the form of a sleeve 16.
It is to be noted that with this construction the brush holders are arranged to present to the several rings a lar e area of multiple brush contact. The chambered frame 1 provides a dust proof housing for the brushes 2 and the positive direct-acting springs therefor. The screw caps 3 permit ready adjustment and dependable setting. The parts are all easily ccessible and interchangeable. llloreover' the snug and secure housing for the current leads in the brush holder studs is of especial advantage.
Although but one specific embodiment of this invention is herein shown and described, it is to be understood that numerous details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the following claims.
I claim:
1. A brush holder comprising an oblong arcuate frame, provided with a plurality of brush boxes formed therein and a pair of supporting studs secured one to each end of said frame, one of said studs being tubular to house a current carrying lead for the brushes with which the holder is to be equipped.
2. A device of the character described comprising. a multiple-box frame of oblong arcuate shape, insulated supporting studs therefor, one at each end, and a conductor carried by one of said studs which is tubular, said conductor being connected electrically to said frame.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a multiple-box frame of oblong arcuate shape, means for supporting said frame at each end, brushes disposed one in each box, a conductor carried by one of said supporting means and connected to said frame, and other conductors positively con nccting the several brushes to-said frame.
4. A multiple-box brush holder of substantially integral character having radially positioned brushes arranged in arcuate aline ment and electrically connected by said holder, each box including a threaded cylindrical flange part disposed radially outward from the main body of the holder and formed integrally therewith, an adjustable threaded cap for the outer end of each box flange, and a spring helix disposed in compression between each brush and the corresponding cap.
A multiple-box brush holder of sub stantially integral character naving radially positioned brushes arranged in arcuate alinement and electrically connected by said holder, ichbox including a threaded cylindrical flange part disposed radially outward from the main body of the holder and formed integrally therewith, an adjustable threaded cap for the outer end of each box flange, a conductor connected positively to each brush and to the brush'holder frame, and a spring disposed in compression be tween each brush and the corresponding cap, said cap being centrally perforated to admit said. conductor axially of said spring.
6. In combination a plurality of insulated collector rings disposed side by side, a pair of studs spaced outward therefrom, parallel with the mug a ms. and equidistant therefrom, and a plurality of oblong multiplebox brush holders disposed side by side opposite sald rings respectively, supported on said studs and insulated therefrom.
7. In combination a plurality of insulated collector rin s disposed side by side, a pair of studs spaced outward. therefrom, parallel with the ring axis and equidistant therefrom, and a plurality of oblong multiplebox brush holders disposed side by side opposite said rings respectively, supported on said studs and insulated therefrom, said studs being tubular and insulated, and each brush holder having a conductor leading therefrom into one or another of said studs for conducting current to or leading it from the brush holder.
8. In combination a plurality of. collector rings, oblong brush holders therefor respec tively, a pair of insulated tubular studs disposed side by side in spaced relation equidistant from the ring axis to support said brush holders,the latter having split sleeves at each end to grip said studs, and insulated conductors from said brush holders housed in said studs respectively, said studs being provided with insulating sleeves extending throu h said split sleeves.
9. n combination a pluaility of collector rings, oblong brush holders therefor respectively, a pair of insulated tubular studs disposed side by side in spaced relation to support said brush holders, the latter having their ends formed to rigidly connect with the studs, said brush holders each having a plurality of radially positioned brush boxes, and said studs having tight fitting insulator sleeves extending through the brush holder.
