INVENTOR @ATTQRNEY UNITED STATES JOHN R. NUNNS, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 3, 1921.
Application filed April 28, 1920. Serial No. 377,327.
cured to portable articles such as scissors,
pens, pencils, and like articles, its object being to so construct the holder that two separate means are provided for attachably securing an article to a garment, and it consists of a supporting base, a spring clip integral therewith, and a safety pin overlying the clip.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same figures and letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views:
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of one form of the holder secured to a pair of scissors showing a projection of the coil of the pin attached to the spring clip.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged broken view of the spring clip and pin showing the manner of spcuring the pin construction to the spring 0 1p.
Fig. 3 is a view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the holder shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a broken view of a metal strip showing the shape of the blank.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged broken view of a pair of scissors showing the clip support in? tegral therewith.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged plan view of a holder showing the supporting base, spring clip, pin and cap made of a single piece of metal, also a lever detachably secured to the clip portion of the device, and
Fig. 8 is an elevation of the same.
The holders shown in the several views are particularly adapted for scissors. Referring to Fig. 1, the base 1 is attached to the scissors 2 by means of the screws 3, 4, the former being the pivotal screw for the blades. The spring clip feature 5 is an extension of the base 1 and normally rests under spring tension against the clip support 6 of the scissors. The coil 7 of the pin 8,
Figs. 2 and 3, is located at the free end of the clip 5 with the projecting end 7 of the coil anchored in the upright 9 pierced from the clip, Fig. 5. The cap 10, adapted to protect the end of the pin, is also an integral part of the base 1, and is blanked from the metal strip 11 with the base and clip. The ears 12, Figs. 2 and 3, are also pierced from the clip and bent inward to maintain the vertical position of the coil 7.
Figs. 7 and 8 show a construction of the holder embodying the same principle as in the preceding views with this exception, the base I clip 5 pin 8 cap 10, and the fulcrum 13, are integral. Means for lifting the clip end of the holder to allow the se curement of the device in position consists of the lever 14 resting on the fulcrum 13. This lever is detachably secured to the clip by means of the chair 15 embracing the edges of the clip. The holes 16 in all of the bases are for the admission of the screws 3 and 4:.
As before mentioned, the object of the invention is to provide two separate means whereby an article, on which the holder is mounted, may be detachably secured to a garment. lVith men, the clip is the universal means employed for temporarily securing the holder to the edge of the vest pocket. But womens garments provide no means, so far as known, whereby a holder can be detachably secured thereto. In large clothing manufacturing establishments, employing, principally, women, there is a constant loss of scissors, either through accident, carelessness or both. By means of the safety pin feature of the holder, it is but a simple matter for a woman employee to secure the scissors on any desired part of her garment, with full assurance that they will be in her possession whether she is temporarily absent or at work.
Forming the principal parts of the holder from a single piece of metal will produce a stronger and more economical combination than if these elements were simply an assemblage of separate units. The shape of the base will necessarily vary in accordance with the shape of the article to which the holder is to be attached.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. A holder of the character described, comprising a base, clip and cap formed of a single piece of metal, a safety pin overlying the clip adapted to engage the cap, means for securing the base of the holder to an article, and supporting means on said article adapted to be engaged by the clip.
2. A holder of the character'described,
. gaged by the clip.
4:. A holder of the character described, comprising a base adapted to be secured to a portable article, said base having an extension to form a spring clip, and a safety pin and its protecting cap overlying the clip and base.
5. In combination with an article having a support thereon, a clip having a hole to receive a screw on the article at one end and having its opposite end formed for engagement with the support, said last named end of the clip having a pin, a cap borne by the clip to engage the free end of the pin, and a lever secured to the clip to raise same up from the support.
6. In combination with an article having a raised supportthereon, a clip having a hole to receive a screw at one end and having its opposite end formed for engagement with the support, the end of the clip having the hole being flat and seated on the article. I
7. In combination with an article having a support thereon, extending transversely of the article, a clip having one end resting on the support and movable upwardly therefrom, means to secure the opposite end of the clip to the article, a lever connected at one end to the clip, and a fulcrum for the lever whereby upon depression of the free end of thelever the clip will be raised up from the support.
8. An article holder including a base having one end extended to form a clip, a fulcrum borne by the base and extending upwardly therefrom, a lever connected at one end to the free end portion of the clip and engaged between its ends with the fulcrum and having its opposite end free so that upon depression of the free lever end the clip will be moved away from the article.
9. An article holder including a base having one end extended to form a clip, a fulcrum borne by the base and extending upwardly therefrom, a levereonnected at one end to the free end portion of the clip and engaged between its ends with the fulcrum and having its opposite end free so that upon depression of the free lever end the clip will be moved away from the article, said base havlng a cap and the clip being extended to form a pin which latter has a free end engageable with the cap.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
