Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 12, 1921.
Applicationfiled March 11, 1920. Serial No. 364,930.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HARRIS, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Side Frames for Car-Trucks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of the invention is to provide a comparatively simple, strong and efiicient side'frame construction for trucks adapted particularly for freight cars and the like wherein increased stability and strength in the connection between the side frame and the transom and bolster may be effected without undue complication of the structure and without materially modifying the standard forms of side frame, while at the same time an efficient support for the journal boxes is provided and the relative positions and spacing of the latter are maintained regardless of strains which may be applied to the truck frame; and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a. plan view of a truck having a side frame structure embodying the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the retaining bar.
Connected by a transom 10 and bolster 11 which may be of the ordinary or any preferred form are the side frames 12 provided with the usual central guides 18 between which the extremities of the transom and bolster operate, said guide being closed at its upper end by the retaining bar 13, preferably of channel iron construction with its extremities let into seats 14 in the upper side of the casting forming the body of the side frame and held in place by bolts 16 which extend downward through the jambs of the bolster guide and serve as the means for holding in place a longitudinal bottom bar 17 which is of a length substantially co-extensive with the side frame and hence is disposed terminally under the extensions 18 of the side frame and in opposing relation thereto, to receive the journal boxes 18 which are arranged between the side guide 'rods 19 connecting the extremities of the bottom bar with said side frame extensions.
The bolster springs 20 are arranged at their lower ends upon the seat 21 and extending inwardly from the jambs of the bolster guides are ears 22 having terminal sockets 23 in which are arranged pins 24 to which are attached chains 25 extending to the brake shoes. a
The body portion of the side frame is preferably of open hearth cast steel while the longitudinally extending bottom bar is preferably of malleable iron, secured in place as above indicated by the bolts which secure the retaining bar in position and serving to give stability to the retaining bar and hence the connection between the side frame and the transom and bolster and pre venting an excessive relative movement of said parts in the operation of the car of I which the truck forms a part.
What is claimed is: I 1. A side frame for car trucks having a vertical bolster guide of which the jambs together with the convergent compression and tensile members of the frame constitute a slngle casting, a retaining bar closing the upper end of the guide, a bottom bar coextensive with and extending under the castin in intermediate contact with the bottom of the bolster guide, common tie bolts housed in the jambs of the bolster guide for securing the retaining bar and bottom bar in place, and pairs of vertical spaced guide pins connecting the extremities of the bottom bar with the ends of the castings forpositioning the axle boxes. a
2. A side frame for car trucks having vertical bolster guide of which the jambs together with the convergent compression and tensile members of the frame constitute a single casting, with a spring seat at the lower end of the guide, a retaining barclosing the upper end of the guide and having terminal interlocking engagement with the adjacent portions of the compression memher, a wrought iron bottom bar coextensive with and extending under the castin in intermediate contact with the bottom of the bolster guide, common tie bolts housed in the jambs of the bolster guide and terminally engaged respectively with said retaining bar and bottom bar, for securin said parts in their operative position, an pairs of vertical spaced guide pins connecting the extremities of the bottom bar with the ends of the casting for positionin the axle boxes. 10
In testimony whereof I a x my signature in presence of two witnesses.
