CAST CAR-TRUCK SIDE FRAME.
This invention relates to carI trucks and has special reference to side frames of the type disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,523,793, granted January 20th, 1925, to
H. WV. Stertzbach and M. R. Hansen, in
which the entire frame, including the journal boxes, is an integral casting and the compression and tension members are in the form of inverted channels extending from the columns to the tops of the ournal boxes.
The object of the present invention is to provide a construction which will tie together the side walls of the compression member' in the refrion of the journal box results from the compression and shearing stresses. The invention is illustrated in the accompanyingr drawing and will be hereinafter fully described and particularly defined.

In the drawing, the referencenumeral 1 indicates one of the columns of the side frame, 2 the compression member, 3 the tension member, and 4 the journal box, the compression and tension members being inverted channels extending from the top and bottom of the column to the top of the journal box. The side walls of the compression and tension members are united with the journal box and the top 5 of the compression member is extended over the top of thejournal although preferably-cut away at its extremity as at 6, to reduce weight. The top plate 7 of the tension member does not extend entirely to the journal box but terminates in an upwardly curved web 8v which follows the edges of the side walls of the compression member in the region of the journal box and unites the walls, said connecting web terminating at Application led March 25, 1926.

Preferably, a central longitudinal connecting and bracing rib, shown at l0 in Fig. 3 and at ll in Fig. 4, is provided over the inner portion of the top of the journal box to connect the same with the top of the compression member and also with the web 8. The rib l0 has its lower edge arranged to span the space 9 .approximately in the plane of the top of the journal box but the rib 11 is elongated so as to extend down in the space 9 and divide the same, the lower edge of this form of rib being close to the bottom of the tension member. It will be noted that the longer rib ll braces the sides, as well as the top, of the journal box Without destroying the advantageous space 9.
The side walls of the compression member are connected by metal which is an essential element of the frame and not a mere accessory having only the function of a tie.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
