Description
ELIZABETH N. BRADLEY.
Wall or Window-Washers.
No. 137,340 Patented Aprill,l873..
A f 1 l WfiZM SSBS MVXLQUT AM PHOTU-UTHOG/MPH/c co m: (ossoms's moans) 'NITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WALL Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,340, dated April 1, 1873 OR WINDOW WASHERS.
; application filed January 22, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH N. BRAD- LEY, of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of (Jonnecticut, have invented a Wall and Window Washer, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in attaching cut sponge to a wooden back of a particular form and construction, the object being to present a soft, pliable substance to the glass or Wall that will not scratch or deface, and that will remove dirt without leaving lint or down, and, while it will retain sufficient water for the work desired, the wooden back will keep it in place and force it to its work.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal view of washer. Fig. 2 is a latitudinal section through the center.
A is the back; B, the sponge; b, grooves; 0, holes; d, cord. The back A is constructed of wood, the face rounded, as shown. Around the edges and across the back in a latitudinal direction the grooves 11 are out. I also bore the holes 0 c c to correspond with the cross-grooves through the back from the center of side grooves. a is a hole bored in back for a hanin square strips the desired lengths, I then secure these strips (using care in setting, so
that the outside end as it was in the natural sponge shall be outside of the washer) to the wooden back by a cord or wire, drawing them well down into the groove, and then pass the string through the hole 0 and secure it. After the latitudinal grooves are all filled I take the longitudinal grooves and carry a row around and secure that in the same manner.
I am not necessarily confined to wire or cord to secure the sponge, as I can use cement if it is desirable.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- The combination of the cut sponge B, grooves 6, holes 0, and cord or equivalent d with rounded wood back A, as described, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses.
Mns. ELIZABETH N. BRADLEY.
Witnesses THEODORE F. BRADLEY, ABRAM SKAATs.
